G128: Mariners 4, Red Sox 2

Mariners - 102 001 000 - 4 9 2
Red Sox - 001 001 000 - 2 5 1
Hernandez (7.1-4-2-1-9, 122) was too much for the Sox bats and Wakefield (5.2-8-4-0-2, 91).

Boston got a third-inning run on Ryan Kalsih's double, an infield error, and wild pitch. J.D. Drew homered in the sixth.

The Sox had a shot at tying the game in the eighth. Pinch-hitter Ball Hall doubled and Drew walked with one out. Brandon League relieved Felix -- and got Victor Martinez on a grounder to first and David Ortiz on a line drive to left. Mike Lowell singled to start the bottom of the ninth, but Daniel Nava hit into a double play and Jed Lowrie flew out.

The Rays lost to the Angels 12-3 and the Yankees lost to the Blue Jays 6-3. Tampa Bay and New York remain tied for first in the East, with Boston 5.5 GB. ... The Red Sox are off on Thursday before starting a weekend series in Tampa Bay.
Example
Felix Hernandez / Jon Lester Tim Wakefield
Scutaro, SS
Drew, RF
Martinez, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Nava, LF
Lowrie, 2B
Kalish, CF
Cash, C
This afternoon's win was Boston's fourth in a row. The Red Sox had not won four consecutive games since winning six straight in mid-June (June 15-20).

In 14 starts since June 13, Hernandez has a 1.54 ERA -- and only a 6-5 record. Two starts ago, on August 15 at Cleveland, he allowed six runs, all unearned. (Which may not be entirely fair. The error came with two outs and no one on; after it, Felix allowed a single, single, double, intentional walk, and a grand slam home run.)

That's sad about Cody's last days. Anxiety in dogs is a tough one.

Kathryn said...

Sad, but in some ways sweet.

nick said...

I haven't mentioned Cody at all but have been reading all the wonderful, happy and sad memories and thoughts you and Laura have posted.

My thoughts are with all of you.

Lots of defensive moves this game. Plays hell on a scorebook page

in puppy news, this whole toilet training thing is amazing! he actually finally knows that peeing inside is bad! and doesn't do it. except for yesterday, when he knew he did something wrong and went right into the crate.

life is so much better.

fuckin eh----ehhh, fuck.

Kathryn said...

How do you note that in the book?

allan said...

what?

lead runner out 5-4
batter safe on FC

Kathryn said...

The defensive changes, not the peeing.

tim said...

FC?

or E5? (or 6, dunno who made the shit throw)

tim said...

lol, gotta look up that pitch on brooks.

Kathryn said...

I'm sure y'all know much more than I do, but isn't there something about not assuming a double play and since there was no advance on the errant throw, there is no error?

nick said...

lake make the bottom tops.

(eh, sounds dirty).

SoSock said...

Would like 3. Will take 2

allan said...

not much to do.

lowrie 2b
becomes
lowrie 2b/1b9
(to 1b in 9th inning)

hall ph8/2b9

etc.

I've got to get the show I just recorded in to the station by 10pm (I live 2 minutes away), but.... bottom of the 9th!

Benjamin said...

Lowell is incredibly, impossibly half the base runner he used to be.

allan said...

DOC-TAH!

tim said...

would've been a double if he had sub-par speed.

alright nava - be beautiful.

tim said...

yeah, i like charging errors. assigning blame is fun!

allan said...

can i get 2?

SoSock said...

OK, I lied about the young'uns. The old man gets it started.
Now the young'uns get their chance

allan said...

I like the fact that when I look at the GDGD page I see we are being pitched to by a "B League" pitcher.
Man, not even single A. B League. :)

GREAT

clean.

both other teams lose, so effectively NOTHING happens - again.

bitch all you want about missing yook, pedey, ellsbury, et al - but any group of punks the bosox throw out there should be able to beat seattle/kc/baltimore/cleveland fer fuck sakes. this is unacceptable.

sweep tampa, be 2.5 back and maintain it until the second sweep of tampa.

theres the new plan. go get em, tito.

tim said...

just flipped to jays - guess whose up with 2 outs, top 9?

mr. 27 :)

nick said...

I do not approve of the result, but I approve of Benjamin's summary.

tim said...

gregg going to blow this for us/toronto...fuck sakes.

allan said...

mr. 27 gets hbp. fuckin jays

tim said...

whew.

everything stays.

allan said...

i say the grandyman can't.

allan said...

YES!

DUH CHOKERS LOSE!

SoSock said...

Damn. Great chance to gain a chunk on both of our nemesi today. (nemesi?)

Rays get blown out and MFY should lose. Although Jeter was just hit by a pitch to load the bases in Canada. Nope, that's it. Granderson flies out to end the game. 6-3 Toronto

SoSock said...

Yeah, so...breaking news reporter I am apparently NOT. :)

But we did gain a half game this afternoon, true?
No, nevermind. MFY & TB both won last night, so no gain.

OK, next plan of attack......

tim said...

pawsox take 4/5 in buffalo.

allan and tim were there for the lone loss.

reddick hit a grand slam in the 10th tonight.

tim said...

*pawsox took 4/6.

Kathryn said...

So this is why Beltre was ejected? Unbelievable.

WTF??

Just did something I seldom/never do, scrolled through a gamethread of a game I had to miss. Allan told me there was a lot of Cody/Tala talk, so I thought I'd check it out.

Thanks (again), my friends, for your thoughts. (Nice avatar, Mrs G.)

** The reason I made Cody stay in our bedroom with her anxiety attacks is because she would walk up and down stairs obsessively - with her hip dysplasia and athritis - and wear herself out - dangerous. So we gave her some anti-anxiety meds and kept the door shut for her protection. (And my sleep and sanity.) So in her last year or so she ended up always sleeping in our room, which was new for her.

** Cody wasn't cuddly. She loved to be pet, have her head stroked, but she didn't like to be hugged and wouldn't let Tala cuddle or sleep with her. But they did play together a lot - Cody mostly lying on her back and Tala running over and around her - until about 6 months ago.

** Tala and I took a long walk this morning and she seemed happy. We're putting away Cody's bowl and food and leash sooner than I normally would, to help Tala into a new routine. I'm sure for Tala the house smells of Cody and maybe it always will (their sense of smell is so acute) but at least we can start making a new Tala-only universe.

It occurs to me I should be writing this on wmtc. So I will.
