G116: Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 002 020 010 - 5 11 0
Blue Jays - 000 101 004 - 6 12 0
John Lackey (8-8-3-1-4, 98) was on his way towards a complete game victory when he allowed a home run to Jose Bautista start the bottom of the ninth. With a 5-3 lead, Terry Francona called on Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon had nothing: Vernon Wells doubled to deep right, Adam Lind singled up the middle (5-4), and pinch-runner DeWayne Wise stole second -- those were Bot's first three pitches, by the way.

Aaron Hill singled; the line drive hit off his Bot's right foot and rolled onto the infield grass, but he stayed in the game. (I was hoping an injury (or "injury") would give Daniel Bard, who had been up in the eighth, time to come in and get warm.) Travis Snider struck out, but Edgar Encarnacion doubled down the left field line (5-5). Lyle Overbay was intentionally walked ... and out came Tito.

It was up to Bard, with no margin for error. Fred Lewis lofted a fly ball to center field. Bard instinctively stuck up his finger, as pitchers do on pop-ups, and then it slowly wilted and his arm sank. There was no chance Jacoby Ellsbury could throw Hill out -- and the Toronto's comeback was complete.

Ellsbury and Jed Lowrie pulled off a double steal in the third and both eventually scored. J.D. Drew and David Ortiz hit solo home runs in the fifth. In the eighth, Salty hit his second double of the afternoon and Darnell McDonald followed a triple, his second in two games.

Ellsbury, CF
Lowrie, SS
Martinez, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Drew, RF
Hall, 2B
Saltalamacchia, C
McDonald, LF
Jarrod Saltalamacchia makes his first start for Boston after five games in Pawtucket and two innings as a sub last night.

Peter Abraham, Globe:
Red Sox fans buried Theo Epstein for standing still at the trade deadline. ...
I was away at the end of last month, but is this true? Buried him? Really? Considering the players coming back from injury need some positions to play, there was very little Epstein could have done. And even for probable helpful hands like Scott Downs, the price was insanely high.

Tonight: Yankees/Royals, 8 PM.
Example
August 12:

1903 - Joe Stanley of the Boston Nationals hits his first major league home run‚ a grand slam off Chicago's Jock Menefee. Stanley will hit his only other home run on September 26, 1905‚ and it will also be a grand slam.

1990 - After a rain delay of 7:12, the White Sox-Rangers game is finally postponed.

1995 - In a 10-10 tie in the 11th inning, the Dodgers have the potential winning run at third and LA's Mitch Webster swings at a pitch in the dirt. Pittsburgh's rookie catcher Angelo Encarnacion scoopes up the ball with his mask. When Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda cites Rule 7.05, which awards a runner two bases if a fielder uses his mask to touch a thrown ball, the umpires allow the winning run to score.

My 5:56 comment was in response to Michael's first comment. With moderation, things are sometimes out of order.

I will add that I'm not crazy about being lectured on the difference betwen tolerance and acceptance. Under the circumstances - people are passionate about their team, and you are cheering when that suffers a bad loss - I think everyone here has been quite tolerant.

When I sent my last post (the really long one, the response to L's points) I got a page that said "Request-URI Too Large" instead of the usual "Your post is awaiting moderation". I was afraid it was lost in the ether. :)

Glad to see you got it.

But the thread went another way, asking what kind of brain a threader cheering for the other team must have. An discussion of the essential qualities of the 'other'; 'he doesn't think like we, here do, weirdness...'.

With all due respect you are inventing HUGE amounts of things that do not exist.

When I say I do not know why a fan of S would hang out in a game thread of fans of team P, I mean exactly what I said: I don't understand it. The appeal is lost on me. It is not something I would do.

But no one should give a shit what I would do. Most people would not sit at home every night with 3 fucking different coloured pens and a bottle of whiteout and a clipboard and keep pitch-by-pitch accounts of baseball games -- with little chicken-scratch notes on various plays. That is pretty fucking weird. So what? I love it, so I do it.

You know how this blog works. If you like it, stay. If you don't, then leave. Or simply read and do not comment. Whatever. The choice is completely up to you.

It is as simple as that. It is as simple as that for Amy or Ish or Laura or Joe or anyone who reads this.

And now steaks and corn and red wine await .....

MH, I did not think your comment was directed at me. You posted it to the thread and I replied. Everyone else is equally free to reply. Because I moderate comments, I often see them first and reply quickly.

You can struggle all you want against whatever kind of behaviour you imagine you see here, but I'm not going to be told that a group of fans enjoying a game together constitutes a "mob" - not without telling you you're full of shit, anyway.

Perhaps you don't know what it's like to be truly passionate about a team. If you think of your team as the "product of a corporation," or however you put it, and as you said baseball isn't worth paying for (!), my guess is you don't.

But if you want to make metaphors for tolerance and war and humanity and lowest common denominator, don't expect everyone here to swallow it and pander to your expectations.

asking what kind of brain a threader cheering for the other team must have. An discussion of the essential qualities of the 'other'; 'he doesn't think like we, here do, weirdness...'.

No one did this, Michael.

WE ARE WATCHING A BALLGAME TOGETHER. And you are cheering for the other team! None of us would hang around a NYY or Toronto gamethread so we don't understand it and are wondering what on earth you are doing. If you take this to be questioning your weirdness and you are otherness, I can't help that, but damned if you're going to characterize my behaviour that way and hear nothing from me.

Do the words "drama queen" ring a bell?

"Can you restate your issues in simple, direct language?"

I felt I had to defend my presence in the thread.

But it's not hugely important. it's just a discussion about the discussion.

L said,

"..it's one thing to have someone on a gamethread cheering for the other team..."

Then Ish said,

"I still don't understand the fascination with chatting in a game thread for the opposing team. There aren't any Blue Jays threads anywhere? Twitter?"

I apologized for the CAPS and later I answered Ish's question.

Later you quoted Ish's question and I thought you were asking me to expand on my answer.

Then L made her points which I responded to, and that's it.

No big deal.

Enjoyed today, especially the post game chat.

I almost never delete or reject comments. Obviously, anyone who is banned will always be deleted, but mostly it is cleaning up double posts or zapping redundant lineup posts!

I have rejected or deleted two of Michael's posts since he has been here: one was a lineup post and the other one was a comment like "Go Twins!" when the opposing team was rallying against Boston.

That is it. Blame Blogger for anything else.

If he wants to post Go Jays! during a Sox-Jays game, be prepared for someone being annoyed at it. That is the price of being a non-Sox fan at a Sox blog.

TIP: If anyone is writing a long comment, do it in notepad or word. I have lost both comments and entire posts when Blogger had fucked up, so I know better know (usually) ...

As I said above, there are a shit ton of Sox blogs. Find the one(s) you like and ignore the others. That's what I do.

Is it too much to expect Bruce Chen to pitch well and C.C. Sabathia to pitch like shit? Yes? Okay.

You better fucking pitch, Chen.

laura k said...

And now it's no big deal. You post a treastise comparing us to a mob and claiming you were "expelled" and now it's no big deal.

So now I'll do something that has historically been very difficult for me to do. I will attempt to ignore you.

Well...let me just say I am SO glad I did not watch the ninth inning. I was out in Brooklyn with my daughter, oblivious, no indigestion...UNTIL I got back to her apartment and saw what had happened. Then I had to rush to get a train back home. I am still steaming mad. Arggh. You are all just lucky I wasn't here!

I have no idea what the long debate at the end of the thread was about. Guess I should go back and catch up. Maybe it will lower my blood pressure or at least distract me!

And it's best to let it all out.

I am letting it out, just not on my poor blameless blog friends! I have a little doll that looks like a certain pitcher with pins stuck all over him. :)

Well, we feel deprived.

Damn Papelbon.

Damn Royals.

ugh. At least the Royals gave it a shot. Tying run at 3rd when the last out was made.

You might as well vent at us, Amy. When you're not here for a Papelbon meltdown, we're all thinking of you and imagining we hear you anyway!
