G39: Yankees 11, Red Sox 9

Red Sox - 010 131 030 - 9 13 0
Yankees - 510 010 004 - 11 13 0
Recap: Things were very shitty.

Then they got better.

Then they got really good and there was much merriment.

Then they got very shitty again, very quickly.

The End.
Example
Daisuke Matsuzaka / Phil Hughes
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Drew, RF
Youkilis, 1B
Martinez, C
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
McDonald, CF
Dear Red Sox: The season is almost one-quarter over. It's time to get your ass in gear.

Dice had one of his best starts in a Red Sox uniform against the Blue Jays on May 11 (7-3-1-0-9, 106). More like that, please.

Hughes (5-0, 1.38 ERA) is the first Yankees pitcher with five wins and a sub 1.50 ERA through his first six starts since "Bullet" Bob Turley in 1958. Hughes faced Boston back on May 7 (7-7-2-1-7, 101). His BABIP is an unsustainably-low .223.

Jacoby Ellsbury played for the PawSox today: 1-for-3 (single, walk, run). He will play the outfield for Portland tomorrow.
Example
Today in Baseball History:

1939 - The first baseball game ever televised: Princeton's 2-1 victory over Columbia at the Baker Bowl is broadcast over W2XBS in New York City. The Times: "It is difficult to see how this sort of thing can catch the public fancy."

1945 - Every American League game is rained out for the fourth consecutive day.

1971 - Tommy McCraw of the Senators circles the bases for an inside-the-park home run when three Cleveland fielders (shortstop Jack Heidemann and outfielders Vada Pinson and John Lowenstein) collide while trying to catch his 140-foot pop-up.

1979 - On a windy day at Wrigley Field, the Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22 in 10 innings. Each starting pitcher lasts only 0.1 of an inning.

You mean Dos Equis?

laura k said...

Allan has been torturing Tala by saying all her favourite words. "We'll go in the CAR to the PARK and for a WALK..." Her twists her head around with every word. It is entirely too cute.

laura k said...

Yes Dos Equis ads

allan said...

OB: scutaro took that throw at 2b, not pedroia. open yer eyes.

Kathryn said...

I'm still watching (on the computer), just not threading. That's a little too much multi-tasking.

laura k said...

Yook better not be hurt!

allan said...

instant rally!

just add chan ho park!

Rob said...

Chan Ho Park, aka Diarrhea. (I know I posted this a while back but it's still funny to me. And to his teammates, too, apparently!)

allan said...

chan ho poop.

Rob said...

I like it!

Rob said...

On NESN they showed Tito arguing with the umpire then God Bless America starts playing and they both realize it, have sort of an "Oops!" moment, take off their hats and face the flag.

They had to, of course, or else Yankee Stadium security would throw them out and call them unpatriotic.

laura k said...

Steinbrenner would send Tito to Gitmo

That was pretty funny on TV, tho. Oops, gotta stop arguing, take my cap off!

allan said...

tito - bagged, gagged and on a flight to bagram

Amy said...

laura k said...

Before Yook hit that, I was about to type...

Your daughter should know better :)

When our phone rings during a game, I alway say, who is calling us during a Boston-NYY game?? Goes to voice mail.

Dr. Jeff said...

OMG this is incredible.

Amy said...

This daughter doesn't know better.

Amy said...

B2B!

Joe Gravellese said...

Diarrhea is running down the Yankees' legs right now.

allan said...

OB said it was good yok did not hit that to hard.

Dr. Jeff said...

laura k said...

Oh it's the non-baseball daughter.

My comment to Tim got hijacked by a dong.

meunier said...

Yay!!

laura k said...

Aug 11 & 12

Aug 11 we would go to the game, and Aug 12 we would watch at our place and hang out

(On our barbaric non-flat-screen TV)

Dr. Jeff said...

Did you see that really sad kid in the stands?

Kathryn said...

Okay, I'm back.

Nice call again Allan! (on the Park comeback)

allan said...

calling the comeback against park is like predicting the sun will rise in the east tomorrow morning ...

laura k said...

Think of it, Dice K gave up 5 runs in the 1st, and here we are ahead in the 8th!

We are great :)

allan said...

i think rays and clev tied in the 10th

laura k said...

baseball > 24 !! :)

tim said...

Right on, that should be doable for me!

Kathryn said...

Ha, L. Yes it is.

Rob said...

Another nickname suggested to me by a friend of mine for Park: The Runny Korean.

allan said...

6 outs to go.

allan said...

bard n bot

laura k said...

Dr. Jeff said...

5 more outs. Can. They. Hold. Lead. ?

laura k said...

allan said...

Dr. Jeff said...

Jeter is allowed to ground into an inning ending DP

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Moving Drew to #3 and VMart to #5 was a good move. Hitters 3-6 tonight are 8 for 16 with 8 RBIs and 7 runs scored. Of course, we can't hit against Chan Ho Park every day (darn).

Dr. Jeff said...

I meant force out.

Dr. Jeff said...

where did that miss? high?

laura k said...

bard, do not be bbard

allan said...

the mfy auto has a broken clutch.

Joe Gravellese said...

I put emma to bed almost 2 hours ago and hung out with her a long time. rough night. 5-run 1st, work woes and tired for me; tired and mandatory violin practice for her.

I then fell asleep too listening to the game on the radio. Each time the sox would score it'd wake me up. back to back got me back in front of the TV.

to the 9th!

allan said...

16 insurance runs would be nice.

nick said...

Incidentally, in '78 I moved to Massachusetts for the 1st time. Just before I turned 4. From Madison to Wendell.

nick said...

alright 12-7 here we come.

laura k said...

That's cool, before you turned 4. Hopefully you qualify as a native.

allan said...

vazquez, the guy the mfy wanted to skip in this series, up

Edward Lee said...

Nomar: "Girardi does such a good job with his bullpen"

I LOL'd.

Kathryn said...

Aaron F'ing Boone speculating that JtC might be hurt. That's why they went to Rivera early yesterday and JtC is not available tonight.

Dr. Jeff said...

I'd feel better with 2 more runs.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

JD may make nick's request come true...

nick said...

No native me, though it's very much the place I identify w/. Just before 7 we moved to upstate NY (Cortland), then southern California for 2 years (Riverside). Then back to Northampton for high school. I've been living in western Massachusetts for the last 22 year though.

12-7....c'mon.

Rob said...

Every time I hear of Wendell, Massachusetts I think of tornadoes.

Pepe Lepew said...

Drive-by posting tonight, but when the Sox were down 6-1, I did not give up.

NEVER give up! NEVER say uncle!

Rawr! Skunks have fierce!

nick said...

No Werd on that one. Make it so, Youk.

laura k said...

In case anyone thought otherwise... I NEVER give up while watching a game. N-E-V-E-R

Pepe Lepew said...

OT, but on XM, it's the Yankees feed.

They sure whine a lot about all their guys being hurt!

allan said...

re vazquez: yook needs to damonize him

laura k said...

Bicoastal then. Plus upstate. I love upstate NY.

Dr. Jeff said...

passed ball first pitch.

Dr. Jeff said...

Be sweet if this guy melts down.

Unless my skunk sense is wrong -- and it rarely is -- this is the game that's gonna turn their season around!

Amy said...

Time for Pap---I will try to remain calm.

allan said...

it's the little red sock in the post.

Amy said...

I have to find some mantra to say when Pap comes in....

Amy said...

COME ON, NO SCREWING AROUND.

laura k said...

If we had a dollar for every game that's supposed to turn the season around...

Amy said...

So much for calm.

Joe Gravellese said...

the fucking fuck

Amy said...

Shit...

laura k said...

Amy said...

I sure wish we had improved our defense in the off season...

Kathryn said...

From my son: "Just get through this inning. We shouldn't even be in the ballgame."

laura k said...

Papelbon is trying to smell like skunk scents

Amy said...

Who do we have up in the pen for the 10th? MDC? Better not be RamRam.

meunier said...

That pitch was up and in I have no idea how A-Rod got the barrel of the bat on it.

nick said...

Pappy Le Pew.

meunier said...

What might save us here is that the MFY bullpen is basically empty.

Amy said...

I had the same thought, Mrs G. We expected to lose almost four hours ago, so I guess we should be happy we still are tied.

allan said...

castis is semi-truping us on that fly - it's 45 feet from the track.. jesus.

laura k said...

Yes, wisdom from Mrs G's son

Joe Gravellese said...

i hate sports

laura k said...

I can't see any bullpen w/ Mariano in it as empty

OK doesn't matter...

Amy said...

Papelbon is still on my SHIT list.

Dr. Jeff said...

Grim.

laura k said...

wow

allan said...

i'm gonna go grab a seat beside amy for awhile...

laura k said...

wow.

bad.

Amy said...

Going to go reread Laura's post and figure out why I am a fan...

Pepe Lepew said...

Well, that was a big bowl of poo....

Joe Gravellese said...

WTFingF

Kathryn said...

What a stinkin' Pap meltdown.

tim said...

HORSE SHIT

Dr. Jeff said...

So much for our closer.

nick said...

hmm.... back to bed.

Rob said...

Four runs given up by Papelbon in the 9th. That'll clean your water, right there.

tim said...

SKUNK SHIT.

Pepe Lepew said...

That's OK, we're still gonna turn it around...

.... just not tonight....

.. Crap, crap, crap, crap ...

laura k said...

the comeback that wasn't

tim said...

CLEAN WATER.

I've stopped believing. That we'll win tonight's game. Because it's over. But not tomorrow, not Wednesday, not September 30th, not EVER until the final score is known.

meunier said...

Tampa also won at the same moment the MFY did.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

yeah, that was a tough loss

laura k said...

nice threading with you all. too bad we don't leave happy.

G'night

Dr. Jeff said...

Glad to see they didn't give up after being down 5 runs in the first, but still, this one hurts.

Pepe Lepew said...

Oh, well, there's always the Bruins..

Oh, wait ... damn!

nick said...

hasn't seen a blown save like this, eh mr. mustache?

tim said...

Boston sports are really regressing to their norm of painful losses. Cept for the Celtics, but who cares about them.

Joe Gravellese said...

This will be a trying year.

Kathryn said...

Night all.

Ugh.

allan said...

So the turnaround starts tomorrow night.

SoSock said...

I'm with Allan. The turnaroound starts tomorrow. There are definitely good signs lately. We just need too see them translated into victories.
Papi's night, and for that matter, his week, is a good sign. The offense coming through after being down early is a good sign. This team did a great job of staging a fantastic comeback against what is undoubtably one of the strongest teams in baseball. Then 1 guy gave it back. I think it might be time to look at moving Bard to the closer spot. Papelbon is just too damn good at justifying Amy's worries.
In the meantime, the band was great tonight, and the goings-on on TV were great as well, for a while. Son Taylor is home for a change, and we were giddy at the prospect of seeing a comeback win vs. the MFY. Those are the best V's anyway.
So, I guess we start tomorrow, er, tonight.
