For what its worth (and maybe not much) Ortiz looked really good during BP on Saturday. He hit a groove and was really driving some balls well. I think he hit about 5 out. On education: for some reason, public schools are much, much better than private ones in Israel. The public uni system is subsidised (sp?), so you pay about 2K a year. And in most cases, unless it's a specific subject where a private school is really good, the people that don't get accepted to the public uni (that have the better reputation, funding, professors, and all that), then they have to pay more to get into a private school (those have lower standards, since you're paying to get in). It seems logical, if you're used to it...

Ofer, I think that outside of the Northeast and certain elite schools elsewhere in the US, that may generally be true here also. Often the best university in a given state is the public university. The Northeast is sort of odd.

Yes it was Andy but I believe I started with the education talk. I don't discount the cost of education. There's a good deal of federal aid available and scholarships but not enough. I also agree about the education standards and tests. I graduated from high school three years ago and it was just like that. High school seemed more like a place to be and a place to work rather than a place to learn, and coming up through school it felt like you had to already know what they were teaching you, oddly enough.
Elementary school was Middle School prep. Middle school was High School prep and High School was college prep. I never felt like I was living in the present. This will be on the test so you need to know this.
Amy, I imagine that's because lots of top schools in the NE are as old or older than the states themselves.

Imagine that. Fully funded education.It's not fully funded by a long stretch. In fact, there are student strikes to lower the tuition almost every year. And I'm probably underestimating the costs. It's more like 3500$ than 2000$, if you include everything... BTW, in Argentina and Mexico (and probably in the rest of Latin America) it IS fully funded. Get accepted, and you pay something like a 50$ enrollment fee per year, and that's it (as far as I understood it, at least)

When the Eck made his comments about his own home runs, I looked them up and learned that at this point in the 1986 season, he had 1 HR (he hit a second HR on May 26). If The Eck can out homer Ortiz, something is very, very wrong.

And of course, as I said, you have to get accepted and THEN you get the almost free education. If you never went to primary or high school, you will almost definitely not be accepted to uni. Plus, a lot of towns don't have schools, or have very very lacking facilities. There is a separate board of education called the "indigenous board of education", or something like that, that tries to help out in underprivileged areas, but of course it's an uphill battle. The situation there is not perfect (or even good) by a long stretch.
I should say that I write what I know about it... I might be mistaken about some (or a lot!) of the details. I'm just repeating things I either witnessed or was told,
