G39: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1

Blue Jays - 000 010 000 - 1 5 1
Red Sox - 020 000 00x - 2 6 1
Wakefield was strong (8-5-1-2-3, 97), making a two-run second inning stand up against the AL East leaders. Boston is now 2.5 GB. (The Yankee beat Baltimore 9-1, so they are 3.5 GB.)

Mike Lowell started the second inning with a single to left and J.D Drew worked an eight-pitch walk. After Julio Lugo popped out, Jeff Bailey singled to left center. Lowell scored on the hit, Drew went to third, and Gumball took second on Adam Lind's throwing error. George Kottaras then lofted a sac fly to left.

Cabin Mirror opened the top of the fifth with a dong to left, but that was Toronto's only run. Only two other Blue Jay runners reached second base.

The Fenway crowd was solidly behind David Ortiz, but Flo went 0-for-3, walking in the first, but then: K, 4-3, K. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a fifth-inning single; he also doubled in the eighth.

David Ortiz (.208/.318/.300) is expected to be back in the Red Sox lineup tonight. Will he batting in his customary third spot in the order?

Terry Francona:
I don't know. I want to talk to him. And I haven't wanted to talk to him yet, because I've wanted to give him some room.
SoSHer Carl Everetts Therapist relayed some information "from someone who interviewed [Vice President of Player Personnel] Ben Cherington" last Friday morning:
Papi's struggles are a combination of mental physical and emotional. He also has been withdrawn and silent in the clubhouse. ... There will be a closed door meeting ASAP that includes Magaden, Tito, Theo, Henry and the training staff. A decision will be made as far as how to approach this thing ...

Suggestions have been made about possible options that include ... Moving Ortiz down in the order ...
SoSHer normstalls:
For what its worth (and maybe not much) Ortiz looked really good during BP on Saturday. He hit a groove and was really driving some balls well. I think he hit about 5 out. Now this was only BP and normally is nothing to be encouraged about, but given his current condition I took it as a glimmer of hope.
John Hickey, MLB.com:
Hitting coach Dave Magadan said Ortiz's mechanics are back where they are supposed to be, so all the slugger needs now is to regain his confidence.
Wily Mo Pena, currently with the Buffalo Bisons, on not hitting home runs in 2006:
[Bronson] Arroyo had two [with the Reds] and I had nothing. [Fans] were jumping all over me every time I came to the plate. I was thinking too much, but once I hit that first one, I was able to breathe and starting hitting. That's going to be the same for Ortiz. ...

He's not swinging the same. I don't know if he's hurt, or if something is bothering him, or if he's thinking about something. I wish I could know something.
Julio Lugo is also expected back in the lineup.

That sucked.

My first 201 of the season!

Edward Lee said...

Good lord, Dustin. There is no reason you should be deferring to Bailey, ever.

laura k said...

Yeah, he knows that. You could read his lips.

Amy said...

OK, 2 away. Get out of this one.

Amy said...

Some insurance runs, please?

whew, que hay un escaparete.

laura k said...

This should be our fastest game of the season!

andy said...

they did the wake bard combo punch to the Angels last week I think. It was amazing.

andy said...

Yeah I don't want Pap to get any saves. Someone else has him in my fantasy league. I also have youk and FY so more offense is good for me.

Amy said...

Fast is good. But only if we win.

A Conformer said...

Evening, all. Just went through the thread- interesting stuff today. Although you have to wonder: is there a baseball game going on?

laura k said...

Oh yes, that goes w/o saying :)

laura k said...

LBJet!

Amy said...

All right! LBJ!

Edward Lee said...

Speed kills.

laura k said...

Hi Ofer, you know we're all watching as we blather.

Amy said...

Yes, Ofer. It all started with Tim saying he was taking a tax course, and off we went!q

Amy said...

Oh, shit. He looked safe to me.

laura k said...

oh fuckety! damn i HATE when lbj is caught stealing!

Amy said...

I guess he got him.

One of those times you say, "Well, would FY have gotten the hit if LBJ was still on base?"

Edward Lee said...

Jacoby was out, and he knew it. He just got a terrible jump from 2nd.

Amy said...

It's Papi time!

Rob said...

So after a late dinner it's taken me 20 minutes to get through the thread.

laura k said...

Here we go Papi... here we go...

Amy said...

I hope Harvey is cheering for Ortiz.

andy said...

yeah ish it was one of those off topic nights.

Amy said...

Oh, man. It is just awful to watch him.

laura k said...

*sigh*

Jaja, yeah, I know. Hey, side conversation might be most of the reason I frequent these threads.

On education: for some reason, public schools are much, much better than private ones in Israel. The public uni system is subsidised (sp?), so you pay about 2K a year. And in most cases, unless it's a specific subject where a private school is really good, the people that don't get accepted to the public uni (that have the better reputation, funding, professors, and all that), then they have to pay more to get into a private school (those have lower standards, since you're paying to get in). It seems logical, if you're used to it...

I love Bay's swing. So effortless. So powerful. He swings a good bat.

I have to wonder if Ortiz is having a roid or HGH hangover like Giambi had.
Maybe he needs to go down to Pawtucket for a few weeks.

Snuffin' Time!

No Wake to Bard tonight, I guess.

5 games in mlb right now are 2-1

laura k said...

Imagine that. Fully funded education.

Amy said...

Ofer, I think that outside of the Northeast and certain elite schools elsewhere in the US, that may generally be true here also. Often the best university in a given state is the public university. The Northeast is sort of odd.

laura k said...

"5 games in mlb right now are 2-1"

cool

andy said...

It makes sense how Israel does it. You earn your way into best and pay your way into average.

Amy said...

Harv sent a very distant and blurry cellphone photo of Pap.

Amy said...

One away!

Benjamin said...

Sit.

laura k said...

Good morning good afternoon good night

wake's last start was our fastest game: 2:26.

after that K, we are at 2:09

Yes it was Andy but I believe I started with the education talk. I don't discount the cost of education. There's a good deal of federal aid available and scholarships but not enough. I also agree about the education standards and tests. I graduated from high school three years ago and it was just like that. High school seemed more like a place to be and a place to work rather than a place to learn, and coming up through school it felt like you had to already know what they were teaching you, oddly enough.

Elementary school was Middle School prep. Middle school was High School prep and High School was college prep. I never felt like I was living in the present. This will be on the test so you need to know this.

Edward Lee said...

Amy, I imagine that's because lots of top schools in the NE are as old or older than the states themselves.

Amy said...

Be mean and scary, Pap.

Anonymous said...

FY!

Amy said...

I agree, Edward.

Amy said...

Pap is smoking tonight.

Amy said...

One more strike.

Amy said...

I do not want to see Millar again.

andy said...

Millar = Young Kruk?

A Conformer said...

Imagine that. Fully funded education. It's not fully funded by a long stretch. In fact, there are student strikes to lower the tuition almost every year. And I'm probably underestimating the costs. It's more like 3500$ than 2000$, if you include everything... BTW, in Argentina and Mexico (and probably in the rest of Latin America) it IS fully funded. Get accepted, and you pay something like a 50$ enrollment fee per year, and that's it (as far as I understood it, at least)

Dirty water. And more love for Wake!

Rob said...

See that's how blue jays die. They drink dirty water.

andy said...

Message sent. Tomorrow they will crush us if the pattern of this season continues.

A Conformer said...

Good, sweet snuffin' tonight!

Benjamin said...

Water.

allan said...

Another W for Wake!!!

Amy said...

What is Wake's ERA?

allan said...

T: 2:13

laura k said...

[Ofer, thanks for the info. I misunderstood! Big stupid movement here too to lower tuition and fees. Although not the massive strikes you see in France, unfortunately.

I know in Mexico many kids don't go to school at all because their parents can't afford the basic fees and uniforms. Indian kids, of course. I'm sure that's the case in many, many countries.

Great game tonight. G'night all!

laura k said...

Amy: 3.59

Amy said...

Wow, Harvey may get home by midnight!

Good night, everyone.

Amy said...

Thanks, Allan, for the info.

laura k said...

"See that's how blue jays die. They drink dirty water."

Allan should make this a headline!

laura k said...

Amy, that info came from me! :)

When the Eck made his comments about his own home runs, I looked them up and learned that at this point in the 1986 season, he had 1 HR (he hit a second HR on May 26). If The Eck can out homer Ortiz, something is very, very wrong.

Amy said...

Oops, sorry, Laura! I thought you had signed off, and my brain must have read L-Girl for Redsock.

A Conformer said...

I know in Mexico many kids don't go to school at all because their parents can't afford the basic fees and uniforms. Indian kids, of course. I'm sure that's the case in many, many countries.First of all, if I'm not totally mistaken, for some reason primary education costs money and the higher one doesn't. And of course, as I said, you have to get accepted and THEN you get the almost free education. If you never went to primary or high school, you will almost definitely not be accepted to uni. Plus, a lot of towns don't have schools, or have very very lacking facilities. There is a separate board of education called the "indigenous board of education", or something like that, that tries to help out in underprivileged areas, but of course it's an uphill battle. The situation there is not perfect (or even good) by a long stretch.
I should say that I write what I know about it... I might be mistaken about some (or a lot!) of the details. I'm just repeating things I either witnessed or was told,

A Conformer said...

Why did the fucking game end? Can't they see we're talking here?

Amy said...

Ofer, are you talking about Israel or Mexico?

A Conformer said...

Last one was Mexico. No one ever discovered Israel but thought it was India, so there aren't any indigenous people there... (:

Wake - our ACE!!
Appears I missed a good thread. Love to yak about education. Seems like maybe it should rank right up there with health care as something a civilized, advanced nation should provide for it's people.
Of course, I might be tripping......

Oh and have I mentioned lately that road games suck?!
My LL team lost another tonight. We are now a perfect 3 - 0 at home, and a not-so-perfect 0 - 5 away. We've had 4 rainouts, all home games :(
I hope we get to mke them all up.

Benjamin said...

FKRs lose in the 11th 4-1.

tim said...

Sorry I had to bail on that thread - looked like a good one, would've enjoyed to keep going but unfortunately had to pay attention in class.

Great W from Wake and the team, hoping Papi can snap out of it tomorrow. Got Penny pitching - we're gonna need runs, and lots of em.

laura k said...

Ofer - in case you check back, which I think you will do - that's my understanding of education in Mexico, too.
