Tampa Bay was seven outs away from the American League pennant -- and the Red Sox were down by seven runs.
The Rays recorded only six of those outs -- and the Red Sox scored eight times to complete the greatest comeback by any team facing elimination and the second biggest comeback in post-season/World Series history and send this ALCS back to Florida.
David Ortiz's three-run dong to right in the seventh was a big blow -- cutting the lead from 7-1 to 7-4 -- but it was J.D. Drew who was the hero. After Jason Bay walked on four pitches to start the eighth inning, Drew clubbed a two-run shot to right off J.P. Howell to bring Boston to within 7-6. With two outs, Mark Kotsay doubled off B.J. Upton's glove in deep left-center and Coco Crisp capped off a 10-pitch at-bat with a line drive single to right. Gabe Gross's throw did not make the infield on the fly and Kotsay scored the tying run.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Kevin Youkilis reached second base on a throwing error by Evan Longoria. Jason Bay was walked intentionally. Drew then lined a 3-1 pitch over Gross's head in right field and Yook scored the game-winning run.

I get frustrated by these types of games when guys get desperate, start hacking at bad pitches, and make things easier on the other team. And the pitchers kinda let things happen as well.

All in all I don't mind dipping down into late fall and winter. If that was just it. But part of the problem with dipping down into winter is the lingering of the snow and brown and mud through March and April here. I can tolerate December and January, and most of February, but by March and April I go crazy, especially seeing so many other places in the world already blossoming into Spring. Here we don't see our first leaves until late April - toward the first of May.
These shutout innings from Oki would be awesome(er) if we could just score some flipping RUNS for him.
And then of course, turning the clocks back and artificially making the night time longer...etc.
Again, I am right there with you, Ish. I find other things to do in winter---reading, watching regular TV, skiing, etc.---but the dark, the cold, the lack of color just makes me feel dark, cold and colorless. So it isn't just that there is no baseball--it's that it means winter, my least favorite time of year, is around the corner. I hate seeing the damn leaves falling off the trees.
The season ending also means the end of these game threads, which is something I look forward to every day. Something you grow very used to and will suddenly end.
I know it's not a favored topic around here, but I do enjoy the football season too. It's very fun game in a completely different way than baseball.

I really don't like football. I used to watch the Patriots each week, and I definitely understand the game - I allowed myself to learn the game and be able to watch it and know what's going on. And I'll probably still watch the Patriots. But I'm just not into it. I hate how it dominates every day headlines like hockey does in Canada.
I do love hockey, though. It will be fun to watch the Bruins this year, and I'll try hosting some game threads for Bruins games - maybe Tim and Joe or others will be interested. It'll be fun to see how the Bruins will fare this season. Sometimes I think I feel the same for them as I do the Red Sox. But they're still just one thing that helps bridge the offseason gap.
It also helps that the Celtics are a good team again. I'll watch those games when the Bruins aren't playing. Or maybe fire up the two televisions in the living room and watch them both at the same time.
There are regular TV shows like House that I like, but it seems like my favorite TV shows are on in the summer also.
I don't complain all winter. I just cope and don't like it much except when we are outside skiing.

Winter has its own charm but I have never liked it. I like being able to have my window open and let the fresh air in, and not have to worry about how much energy is being used to heat the house, and having to go to a gym to exercise rather than go for walks or bike rides. I've just never been a fan of winter.
Maybe it'll change in a couple years when I might be better able to step out of this climate for a winter vacation here or there.
I love big snow storms, though. But we don't get as many of them here as places further inland do. Instead we have to deal with rain-snow lines and sleet and that thick, heavy snow. It can rain in January and snow in April.
Yeah, it's not for everyone. I like summer a whole lot more now that I have a backyard, but in NYC and Philadelphia, I hated it. So I can relate.

In a way, it's been more interesting that way. Last season was exciting, but this season has been way more dramatic. There were times when I thought we were going to miss the playoffs, which made every win that much sweeter.

I was able to get two tickets for World Series game 3 in Philly, and I was surprised the tickets weren't more expensive - $125 each. A splurge, I admit, but when I got the email saying I'd been selected for the "opportunity" to buy tickets I was thinking that they would be closer to $200 apiece (which I wouldn't have paid). Granted, they're not the greatest seats -- pretty far down the LF foul line -- but I'm still psyched.

Nobody asks how long you've been a fan or if you actually are a fan or what.
I used to say there should be a pop quiz. You should at least be able to name the starting player in every position and all starting pitchers. If you can't do that, no tix for you.
But it also sounds funny to me to hear people complaining about the corporate tix and the expensive seats. Unfortunately that's what I expect from MLB. They are extremely un-fan-friendly.
I'll be routing for Philly tho actually. I like their accents and Gia Carangi was from philly.
Bottom line: I'd rather not face the World Champions 18 times next season.

I know a couple of people who went to WS games last year. One just got lucky with the online thing. (dammit, I tried! I swear I almost got fired for how long I spent at work try to get a ticket.) The other has an uncle who is high up in the Cardinals organization.

I have felt that way for a long time, hoping I was wrong, but thinking, this is the Rays' year.
When I read that comment about the "inevitable" feeling, I immediately recalled Laura saying several weeks ago, or more maybe, that she had the same inevitible sense about the Rays this year that she had about the Sox last year.
Getting close now.
I'll watch the series, but I definitely don't want to watch any celebration that might happen tonight.

Scoot Boras had an interseting interview on Kay's show today.....Kay asked, did you tell Manny to work on getting his way out of Boston....He first said I don't have that kind of influence, then went on to say to maximize his earning potential he had to be a free agent so , I guess you have to read between the lines....
I've been to lots of playoff and WS games. It's not impossible. Ask Jere - he got lots of playoff tix.
