G139: Red Sox 5, Orioles 4

Orioles - 100 300 000 - 4 5 1
Red Sox - 000 000 221 - 5 9 1
Through six innings, the Red Sox had only three baserunners, all of whom failed to reach second. In the final three innings, however, 11 runners reached base, and five of them scored, and the Red Sox walked off with a win and a sweep of the Orioles.

In the ninth, with the game tied 4-4, Alex Cora lined a single to right-center (his third hit of the afternoon). Coco Crisp dropped a squib bunt down the first base line. The ball rolled maybe 15 feet and had just spun over the foul line when it hit a little rock and hopped back into fair territory. Pitcher Jim Miller -- who made his major league debut last night -- grabbed it but his throw was low and late to first. Two on, no outs.

Jacoby Ellsbury (who robbed Aubrey Huff of a home run in the fifth with a leaping catch over the visitors' bullpen wall) also dropped down a bunt. It was directly in front of the plate. Miller got to it quickly, turned and fired to third. His throw was very wild, well to the left of Huff's glove. Indeed, the third base umpire had to duck back out of the way. The ball sailed into left field and Cora scored easily.

Boston got on the board when Dustin Pedroia homered down the left field line with one out in the sixth. Then, with two gone, Jason Bay was hit by a pitch in the foot, Jason Varitek walked on four pitches, Cora bunted for a hit, and Crisp walked. Baltimore led 4-2.

In the seventh, Jed Lowrie was called out on a short check swing. David Ortiz walked and Pedroia doubled into the left field corner (his third hit of the day!). Kotsay then banged a 2-1 pitch that was slicing to left-center. Adam Jones chased it, but seemed afraid of hitting the wall and pulled up short. The ball hit low on the wall, Jones banged into the wall anyway and fell down. It was a game-tying triple for Kotsay.

Cora also made a huge play in the top of the eighth. Baltimore led 4-2 and Huff had singled and stolen second base with no outs. Oscar Salazar hit a grounder to Cora's left and Huff took off for third. In one smooth motion, Cora gloved the ball and whirled and fired to third. Lowrie slapped the tag down on Huff for the out on a very close play. Justin Masterson then got an inning-ending double play two pitches later.

The White Sox beat Cleveland this afternoon 4-2 to stay 4 GB the Red Sox in the WC. ... A Yankees win over the Rays tonight would bring Boston to within three games of first place in the East.

***

Lance Cormier (4.61, 95 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.82, 161 ERA+)

Afternoon baseball!

Kirk is going with his bullpen for the entire game today. This is Cormier's 36th appearance of the year, but it's his first start:
Cormier has been stretched out to four innings once this season, on June 28 in relief against the Nationals, but hasn't pitched more than two innings since that outing. Trembley said on Tuesday night that he had no expectations for Cormier's longevity on Wednesday afternoon.
Kotsay gets a start at 1B, Bay still hitting 6th. Oatmeal inside.

And:
White Sox/Indians at 12
Yankees/Rays at 7
Twins/Blue Jays at 7

Tina Fey's hosting SNL this Saturday, apparently, so I'm assuming it's on her agenda.

Allan, there's a big roobarb (That's how they spell rhubarb in Wasilla, Alaska) over whether A-Rod actually hit a home run.

I refuse to watch any of this shit. First of all, fuck the system, second of all, fuck the media.

Although I did manage to register to vote at the concert I went to in NY a couple weeks ago :P

At the end of their set, and after several beers, Bob Weir said that if we "pledged" to vote, we could enter a draw to win a free autographed guitar....Not only did I pledge to vote - I actually registered.

"Are you from New York State?"
"Yup" (lie)
"Do you have your SSN?"
"No"
"Do you know it?"
"Yup" (lie)

Filled out the forms, didn't register for any party and then got my ballot to win a free autographed guitar! hahaha, the system sucks. a goddamn canadian is registered to vote you fools.

It's amazing. All you hear about really, is what is bad about each party. And the good things these people say about their own parties are pretty much the same. And what they want to do. Change, etc.

Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden said yesterday that he and running mate Barack Obama could pursue criminal charges against the Bush administration if they are elected in November.

"If there has been a basis upon which you can pursue someone for a criminal violation, they will be pursued," Biden said during a campaign event in Deerfield Beach, Florida, according to ABC.

"[N]ot out of vengeance, not out of retribution," he added, "out of the need to preserve the notion that no one, no attorney general, no president -- no one is above the law."

Why do I think that if the Obamas had an unmarried, pregnant 17-year-old daughter, the dittoheads would not be saying "Hey, that's cool! These things happen! It's America!"

Apparently someone is watching the RNC :o.
why bother
Same old fearmongering that got Bushie his second term, after he didn't really win his 1st one!
They're running commercials here about how we haven't been attacked by foreign terrorists since 9/11. As if that shows what a great job Bush has done. IIRC there were no more attacks after the '93 bombing until after Bush took office. No, I don't blame Bush for the 9-11 attacks, but I guess that means Clinton was fabulous, right Repubs? I mean, you know, using your criteria there and all.

Rob said...

I love Mittler's attitude. Uh, we're conservative. We're awesome! Liberals suck!

Sosock, I needed my daily dose of comic relief.

Amazing thing was he paused a bit up the line, watching the ball. When it bumped fair he turned on the jets and still legged it to first.

SoSock said...

Apparently the Brewers tried to get a call by the scorer at CC's 1-hit game reversed to give him a no-no. They have a gripe. LaRoche hit a dribbler just to the left of the mound. CC booted it when he went to pick it up. I watched the replay and I think if CC fields it clean it's an out. Adam was only halfway down the line when he flipped the ball away. Probably hurts his cause that it was him that made the error, altho it shouldn't.

With modding back on, I bid you all a good night.

Rob said...

Thats her son who is in the military and heading off to Iraq.

Gotcha. I thought he wasn't there but was getting ready to go to Iraq. Neither here nor there. I wasn't bashing just to bash, either, although I got carried away a little bit. But thanks Casey because sometimes when other things happen I need a little reminder that it's still a baseball blog.

Rob said...

I've never been a big fan of the way close plays are scored. There's one official scorer at each ballpark who has to make the call almost right away. There's a lot of room for human error and home cooking. Maybe A or someone else could answer this for me, but the official scorers work in the same ballpark each season?

If that's the case, it'd be a good idea to have more than one scorer, and in a perfect world it'd be good to see them move around to different ballparks.

As far as C.C.'s "one"-hitter, a general "unwritten rule" for scoring is the first hit is a clean hit. Not a lot of question as to whether it'd be an error or not. I didn't think MLB would reverse the call, though.

laura k said...

Yeah I was confused about you flipping out. I missed the day you did I guess.

Everyone did - it never happened.

One morning I skimmed through a gamethread I had missed. There was some political talk, and one person made a comment that - had I been there - I would have blown a gasket over.

I announced this, and several people said that watching me explode would be highly entertaining.

I was thinking that you were somehow now a rabid republican.

Ha! I'm not even a rabid democrat! :)

andy said...

Ardent then?

nick said...

but, are you rabid?

nick said...

I want to make one point clear. In talking about oCoC's bunt, I mentioned being distracted by a beer-getter. This was obviously after the 7th inning, but the guy was returning to his seat with a rather full beer after having been away since--probably the 7th inning.

allan said...

Ardent then?

Nope. Why support people who you do not agree with?

I think one thing the conventions do that I like is give you a feeling of how things would look and feel if each party won the election.

If you take everything they say as truth, sure.

I'd liken it more to someone trying to make a perfect impression on a first date. He says all the right things and is polite and attentive and you never get any idea of how the person truly is. You'd have to live with the guy for that -- and that is often a very different experience.

***

Now:
I'd rather keep campaign stuff out of comments, but game threads do wander off from baseball into the real world. Plus, I don't want to be a dick about it and make a rule. Just keep in mind that while it's allowed, I'm not crazy about it.
