G126: Red Sox 7, Orioles 2

Red Sox - 210 030 010 - 7 15 1
Orioles - 002 000 000 - 2 9 1
Dice (5-6-2-5-6, 105) stranded nine base runners in his five innings, Jason Varitek homered for the second straight night, and Kevin Youkilis homered and singled twice, driving in three runs.

Yook's dong was the key hit, as it increased Boston's lead from 3-2 to 5-2. Everyone in the lineup helped out: the first nine Red Sox hits were spread out evenly -- one each for batter in the order.

Jacoby Ellsbury singled twice, stole two bases and scored two runs. Justin Masterson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

We're doing our part. Keep winning and hope that eventually the Rays lose a couple games in a row ...

Tampa Bay scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to rally from behind and beat the Angels 4-2. Toronto scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to squeak past New York 2-1, dropping the Yankees 11 GB the Rays. The Blue Jays are in 4th place, 12 GB.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.74, 164 ERA+) / Daniel Cabrera (4.78, 91 ERA+)

In his last nine starts (since June 27), Dice has a 1.91 ERA.

In his wins and no-decisions this season, Dice has an 1.87 ERA (115.2 IP, 95% of his innings)! In his losses -- only six innings -- his ERA is 19.50.

SoSH discusses a possible aspect of his pitching philosophy -- would Dice rather walk a guy than "give in" and allow a hit? Are his high walk totals more of a strategy than a lack of control? The many walks -- and the subsequent higher pitch count -- mean more work for the bullpen, however.

And: Angels/Rays and Yankees/Blue Jays at 7 PM.

Can we please have a clean innning now and then?

(Thanks, Masterson, for the break.)

Poppycock. Now no one will see my hello :(

I get 401. 201 last night. 601 next?

Kittens are adorable, but they make me feel like I've been doing lines of pollen.

Ish, right, I agree. The "type" I'm thinking of tend to be the bigger guys. I think they're more used to people not challenging them, and feel more entitled to push others around.

You can just imagine how I get along with men like that!

One more flippin' out, MDC. Do us a solid.

Hi Tim! We see you. :)

Amy said...

Tim, sorry you were sick. All done with exams? I always got sick after exams. Run down, stress, etc.

laura k said...

I'm totally allergic to cats, too, but kittens are SOOOO cute. Their little round heads, with the fur sticking straight up!!!

Amy said...

Cat allergies are awful. My brother has bad allergies, loves cats and dogs, but has neither.

The first round of dirty water is on me!

Tim, you can get the next round!

Sosock, you are far more eloquent than I could ever be. Thank you!

I think James' point was he trusts Masterson more himself, and wonders why Tito wouldn't use someone less trustworthy with this lead, in case you need more trustworthiness tomorrow.
Of course.....I could be tripping.....

Yeah, the fact that Masterson had been pulled confused me...

laura k said...

Tim, hope you're feeling better. Dylan will be great, for sure, he's so great live now, if you can get past his wrecked voice. Where's the show? One of the Niagara casinos?

Tony said...

Agua sucia!

To quote the immortal Joe Schulz, "hooray for our team!"

Some kittens have creepy eyes, though.

And all of this Varitek/Heidi talk... Oi. It puts her in a different light for me. Kind of like the way you feel when your brand new car's been repaired after it's been into an accident.

Exams done last Tuesday...yeah, got sick starting Thursday - that may have somethin to do with it...especially since I had like 12 hours between the end of the last exam and the start of work. Oh well, got antibiotics now!

I'll check in tomorrow sometime, but need sleep and ginger tea for now.

Are Bob's commercials the worst thing on TV?

I vote yes.

Tony said...

Tim...just saw that you're going to see Dylan. Very jealous. Is it your first time?

tim said...

Also show is at Copps in Hamilton...he did the casino circuit last year, apparently wasn't that great.

6th row tomorrow will be great!

Rob said...

Red Sox signed veteran corner infielder Jason Lane to a AAA contract. September call-up probably. Give some more depth.

Benjamin said...

GDGD doesn't have any video from the game.

Yeah it will be first time seeing Dylan....I missed him when he opened up for the Dead a few years back at six flags...I was more concerned about going on rides...little did I know.

But he did play a couple songs with the dead, which was pretty sweet.

Also, sweet blog tony - I'll have to check it out in more detail soon

Tony said...

BTW, just saw the description of A-Rod's play in the 9th tonight...the ball squirted away from the Toronto RF, he tracked it down and nailed A-Rod at 2nd by 10 feet.

NOW HOW ABOUT THE MFY TRADE THAT LOAFING F-STICK??????

laura k said...

Tony, no need to be jealous, Dylan plays everywhere all the time.

He's playing one of the CT casinos soon.

Tim, that sounds great. Feel better and enjoy!

See you all... Friday.

I saw Dylan last year. Can't really sing anymore. Sort of depressing.

Tony said...

Tim...thanks! Didn't want to advertise it, you know, out of tact and all. :p

The Dylan experience is always great. His band is always well-oiled, and sometimes Bob is feeling it and pulls out a rarity or two. Or, hey, Like A Rolling Stone live!

Amy said...

Phil, that kitten is so cute. Looks a bit like Smokey did when we got him .

Dylan at Foxwoods struck me as quite incongruous.

Tim, feel better.

I am off for tonight, will tune in late tomorrow.

Rob said...

I'll put up a game thread post for tomorrow night's game on my blog. Sound good? Shift the party over to my place. We'll get drunk on dirty water and have a blast!

laura k said...

Always great? No, definitely not. It can be horrible. But these days it's a very good show, if you can handle his voice. Which is beyond shot.

Tony said...

Sorry, blind Dylan homerism here. Change that to "the Dylan experience is always great *for me*". Quite frankly, dude's getting up there in years, and any chance to see him live is good, bad voice or no bad voice.

I'd give my left kidney to go back in time and see the Rolling Thunder Revue in '75, though...

A Conformer said...

Jason Lane? Hmmm...

Also, on the all-roads team with Huston Street, Arthur Rhodes, and probably some others.

oooh, 6th row for Dylan - cool

Looking over at RLYW after tonight's staggering Yankees loss to Toronto (tee hee), and a bitter poster took out his frustration on Youk and his cheap HRs this season - apparently half of them are Fenway dongs or something. Here's the link:

http://www.hittrackeronline.com/detail.php?id=2008_2214&type=hitter

Leaving aside the validity of his claims, any Yankees fan complaining about an unfair stadium advantage needs to pull his head out of his ass and think about how many dingers Ruth would've lost out on if right field wasn't a hop, skip, and jump from home plate at their shithole of a ballpark.

Rob said...

Another Jays win tomorrow and they'll be tied with the MFY for 4th place!

How is a music show good when his voice is so bad. I remember I saw Sinatra in Omaha in 92 or 93 , Talk about shot, it was uncomfortable to watch , losing words ,voice all over the place. I just wonder why these guys still try and do it when they have to know it is subpar.is it for the money? ego? or just because they love it?

nick said...

Looks like I missed a good thread. I laughed out loud (sorry: ROFLMAO) multiple times.

I think l-girl mentioned it, but the the biggest difference between Heidi and the stupid politicians is the power dynamic--assuming, for the moment, that it happened. I'm happy to assume, particularly for her sake, that it didn't. But there comes a point where truth ceases to matter in relation to the acceptance of rumors.

I want to see video of what FY did to get ejected. I hope someone comes through on youtube.

Cronenberg. I really like Naked Lunch the movie. I've watched it a bunch. Perhaps my favorite Cronenberg film. On the other hand, I hated Crash--the antithesis of the great J.G. Ballard book. I thought Cronenberg would nail it...nope. He was was cold where he should have been hot.

I look forward to the Jays and the MFY flipping tomorrow.

Looking at Dylan's set lists for his last 3-4 shows, he's been pulling some odd choices out.

Not a super lot of variety from him these days, but there have been some surprises, including one Jesus song "I Believe In You" played for a couple nights because (I assume) Jerry Wexler had died. Wexler produced his Slow Train Coming LP in 1979.

allan said...

I should explain that while I have no use for religion, I think Dylan's two gospel albums are fascinating and the short tours he did behind them are some of his best music.

Thought for the day: I miss Manny. The lineup misses Manny.

I maybe wrong but I think I have seen Papi walked in front of Youk 3 times and he came through each time.......

I don't see where the line up misses Manny yet. In the 5 losses we have had since Manny being gone we scored 3, 3 5, 1 ,4......in the 12 wins we have scored 96 runs...

laura k said...

I don't see where the line up misses Manny yet.

Yesterday our lineup had three sucky hitters. I'd rather see Manny instead of any of them. That's all I'm saying.

Rob said...

I thought yesterday, Youk is playing SO well batting clean-up. Then I thought about it, and if we had the FULL Manny as the clean-up hitter, Youk would be batting somewhere else in the line-up, doing the same thing he's doing now.

Oops, didn't read carefully, did I?

Nice that Dylan did an unspoken tribute to Jerry Wexler.
