G118: White Sox 6, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 300 002 000 - 5 7 2
White Sox - 014 010 00x - 6 9 2
I wasn't able to watch much of this one, but after Mike Lowell's three-run home run in the first, there wasn't much to see.

Buchholz lasted only three innings (3-7-5-2-4, 74). Down by one run, Boston loaded the bases in the seventh on three consecutive walks, but Dotel came in to get Lowell to hit into a double play and end the potential rally.

Los Angeles capped their first sweep of New York at home in 13 years with a 4-3 walk-off win (Chone Figgins's single off Mariano Rivera scored Howie Kendrick). Tampa beat Seattle 11-3 for their 71st win, a franchise record.

The Red Sox are 4.5 GB the Rays, while the Yankees fell to 8.5 GB.

***

Clay Buchholz (5.94, 75 ERA+) / Gavin Floyd (3.66, 122 ERA+)

Buchholz has a 6.59 ERA in his five starts since being recalled from Pawtucket. ... Last Tuesday, Floyd went only four innings against the Tigers, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks.

Boston has been either 3 GB or 3.5 GB for the last nine days. Since July 30, the Sox and Rays have mirrored each other almost identically:
Rays - WxWWWLWWLWW
Red Sox - LxWWWLWWxLW
Tampa Bay has won 70 games this year -- tying a franchise record set in 2004. They have 46 chances to set a new record. ... Roughly halfway through a soft early August schedule -- Cleveland, Seattle, Oakland, Texas -- the Rays are 4-2.

Yankees/Angels at 3:30 PM and Rays/Mariners at 4 PM

***

This date in baseball history:
1904 - Jack Chesbro [Highlanders] is knocked out by the White Sox after pitching 30 complete games in a row.

1944 - Red Barrett of the Boston Braves throws only 58 pitches and shuts out the Cincinnati Reds 2-0. This is the major-league record for fewest pitches in a nine-inning game. The game takes one hour, 15 minutes, the shortest night game ever.

1971 - Sixteen baseball researchers at Cooperstown form the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), with founder Robert Davids as president.

1978 - The Red Sox trip the Indians, 6-5, in 13 innings as Butch Hobson scores the tying run on a bizarre play: He lofts a pop fly behind second base and races around to 2B as 2B Duane Kuiper loses the ball in the sun. Kuiper picks up the ball but bumps into 1B Andre Thornton and the ball rolls towards first base and C Bo Diaz. With Hobson motoring towards 3B, Diaz overthrows the base. Hobson, having slid into the third, picks himself up and races home. The throw from the outfield is in time to Diaz, but he can't get the ball out of his glove and a sliding Hobson is home free. A George Scott double and Rick Burleson single then wins the game. [box]

1999 - The Red Sox defeat the Royals, 9-6, as Boston P Tim Wakefield ties a major league record by striking out four batters in the 9th inning. [box]

L-girl, the ONLY time I ever watch TV on TV is baseball, and now that I have MLB.TV it's only when I'm out at a bar or during the postseason.

I don't even have cable.

(It's not that I don't watch TV shows, it's just that... let's say, I have alternate means of delivery.)

Tony said...

Thank you, Jeemer! Nice 1-2-3 from him.

LET'S GET SOME RUNS!

Damn it, Lowrie.

LBJ - YOU are the key to this inning.

Came back just in time to hear LBJ's AB.

And back to work I go.

come ON scrappy mcdirtdog!

Rob said...

Bugger. clear and clean H20.

laura k said...

OK, ALNM, so how does that fit in w/ the question? When you read that people watch x number of hours of TV per day, do you think baseball counts?

laura k said...

I read the water is clean, but the game is still going on on the radio.

And

now

clean

water.

Bah.

Sigh.

L-girl, AFAIK when those studies are done it's a matter of asking people to report how much TV they watch, so the results are as suspect as any self-reporting is, and also whether baseball counts would depend on whether the person being asked counted it. I don't know of any direct measurements of people's watching, which doesn't mean they don't exist.

My point was, I guess, that if I were asked I'd say that I watch an average of about 0 hours of TV a week (maybe 0.1), but in fact I spend more time than that watching TV shows - just not on TV. So my answer might be deefeating the purpose of the question (assuming the purpose is to find out how much time people spend vegetating in front of TV series or something like that).

LOLsurveys!

5-1 RAYS. get ready to be parked 4.5 out. ugh

Yes, I agree.

Nevertheless, my question. Which you obviously don't want to answer, so never mind!

I wasn't asking in terms of scientific accuracy. Just wondering what people think - does their baseball time count as TV time, or is TV time a separate thing?

A little night musing said...

It's not that I didn't want to answer your question. I guess I wasn't sure what your questions was.

I don't have a quantity in my head called "TV time," but the analogous thing might be "video time" and I definitely don't count baseball in that, for whatever reason. Something to think about.

Shittiness.

ARod doubles in a tie game to lead off the eighth. And gets thrown out stealing third. What a douche.

So, bottom 8, 3-3. I'm just finding out here that Wake's on the DL. That is shitty.

jere, A-ROD IS CLUTCH... for the other team!

girardi is like a he-man version of a whiney ben stiller.

In the short game from 1944--the guy gave up 2 hits, so that's 29 batters faced (if no one reached on an error, or no DPs, etc.). 58 pitches. 2 pitches per batter. If I'm that manager, and I've somehow let my team get to that point, I'm saying, Everyone waits to swing until there are two strikes. Anyone who doesn't will be fired. And, of course, tortured.

Angels & Yanks going bottom 9, tied.

manny is so good. two out , two run double for the dods to take the lead in the 7th

And my sweetie Julian pitched a very nice inning for Boston's other team.

I'm slightly happy.

Cano for some reason doesn't go for the ball on the game-winning hit. That was weird. Yanks 8.5 back.

Every team: What can we do to get this guy?

Red Sox: What can we do to get rid of this guy?

Heh. Manny just fouled one off into nowhere-ville and made it to base.

Why doesn't anyone criticize the move to bring Bucholtz in and send Masterson down? That has been a disaster, with Clay doing as badly today as the first game, while Masterson has been steady in relief and had been great starting. Bring back Masterson as a starter, those five games have hurt!

Anyone? here at jos , the media ...
are you criticizing it or just questioning it..I believe with Masterson it is a matter of innings...I beleive todays move with Wake might have been planned, but ,they also said he is getting a cortisone shot, so who knows? you may see 3 different rookies in the next 3 weeks. ...We have 6 with Tampa in Sept. I assume we tread water until then....

Red Sox 6-3
Dodgers 4-5

Since Manny trade

We need to pitch, we pitch we win.

I had the same question. Criticize it if you want, then people will assess and discuss.

nixon33 said...

definitely a matter of innings for masterson. he'd def be starting if it wasnt. the only way they can get the most out of him *THIS YEAR* is in the bullpen.

i miss schilling.

No. We drove in to work at 11:30 on Sunday and there was a sign saying part of a highway was closed, but that's fairly common. I didn't know anything until I looked at various headlines around 4 PM (which was about 12 hours after it happened)!

We are about 20-25 minutes west of the city and I think this happened on the east side.
