G112: Red Sox 5, Athletics 2

Athletics - 000 020 000 - 2 5 1
Red Sox - 100 301 00x - 5 8 0
Jed Lowrie tripled in two runs in the fourth, giving the Red Sox the lead for good, as Boston cruised to a win and a sweep of the A's.

Julio Lugo has had three games this season in which he has driven in more than one run. Lowrie also has three -- this month! (Please note today's date!)

Matsuzaka (6-4-2-2-8, 105) still had pitch count problems. He came into the game with an average of 17.6 pitches per inning, 2nd worst in the AL. And today he threw: 17-26-12 16-21-13.

But he worked out of a man-on-third-no-out jam in the second and at one point had retired 10 in a row, seven of those by strikeout. A one-out walk and a Barton homer gave Oakland a brief lead.

Jason Bay singled twice and scored twice. He also fielded a ball off the left field side wall and gunned down Mark Ellis -- the second batter of the game -- at second. So far, this guy has the Midas Touch.

Elsewhere, two wild games:
Tigers - 001 010 011 1 - 5 12 1
Rays - 000 000 130 2 - 6 8 0

Angels - 210 200 040 - 9 11 4
Yankees - 000 013 46x - 14 14 0
We stay 3 GB, New York remains 5.5 GB.

4:22 PM: Play ball!

3:44 PM: Rain delay with Sox batting in the bottom for the sixth.

***

Dallas Braden (4.39, 89 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.04, 145 ERA+)

Braden is a 24-year-old LHP who made his debut last April, totalling 14 starts and six relief appearances last year (72.1 IP, 6.72 ERA). However, he did strikeout 55 batters in those 72.1 innings, thanks to a superior changeup.

He began this season with 11 relief appearances before joining the rotation on July 22. On that day, he faced the Yankees (5-4-1-4-1; an 8-1 win) and on July 28 pitched against the Royals (6.2-6-4-2-7; lost 4-2).

Braden has never faced anyone on the Red Sox roster.

In his last outing, Matsuzaka gave up six runs in five innings against the Angels (though he walked only two batters). This is his third start of the season against the A's, but his first since April 1.

Manny talk is never gonna go away .

He asked to be traded for some reason, which no one knows.

He was going to leave at the end of the season anyway.

So are we better off with Bay for 2 months and a season or Manny for 2 months and 2 draft picks?

Everyone ,most fans, are sad to see him go, but it is time to move on.

If , which I beleive to be true, the players were fed up. Why the constant anger that he is gone?

I don't care how the media treats it. Why are so many of you so mad.

Is it stupid to chant Manny who? yes.

But he is a Dodger now.

Does he run out balls all the time. no . alot don't

Do I think that is why he was traded . no

He hated it here. For some reason we will never know..

My only problem with Manny is that fact that for the last month and parts of 8 seasons he hated being apart of something I truly love. The Boston Red Sox.

Joe Grav said...

I don't think anyone's angry he's gone. Sad, yes, angry, no

A little night musing said...

Well, I was enjoying watching Manny, until 9casey reminded me to be mad.

A little night musing said...

Cute shoulder-bump between Manny and Kemp.

Oh, wait. I mean, grr am I mad!

A little night musing said...

Heh. Manny 4-for-5.

A little night musing said...

There's Manny's triple. Too bad he didn't hit it!

Joe Grav said...

wait, what happened?

A little night musing said...

joe, the batter after Manny (I forget who it was and I'm too bored to look it up) hit a triple.

There was talk of Manny going for the cycle since his first three hits were a single, double, HR. Scully mentioned how hard it is to hit a triple, I think during that last at-bat.

I just thought it was ironic.

allan said...

Manny is 8-for-13 as a Dodger.

Rob said...

Bay is a Type A free agent too, I believe. If he's gone after next season, those 2 draft picks come back into play.

Rob said...

By the way, in case anyone cares - Brandon Moss hit a home run today!

Craig Hansen took the loss. 1.2 IP, H, ER, BB, 0 K

Ish if he plays well for the rest of the season . Do you see signing him long term maybe 4 years extended in his current contract , or do you think they will wait for someone else? i.e. Holliday

laura k said...

Totally off-topic: Joe Grav mentioned this in (I think) last night's game thread. Good perspective on trashy McCain ads.

And if anybody is here and you are making out the lineup card........Ellsbury or Crisp.....?

Good question. A good sign is Bay isn't having much of a problem adjusting to the American League thus far. Holliday should be on the market after this season, but so should some top of the line pitchers, including Ben Sheets and C.C. Sabathia. I feel like right now, seeing the way Bay plays, it'd be a good idea to keep him at 7+ million and sign another starting pitcher. I'm not sure how the Red Sox would want to go about that, payroll wise.

I do think that Matt Holliday will cost more than Jason Bay.

It also begs the question as to what Tim Wakefield's plans after this season would be.

Also with Bay being under control for next season as well, that question for the Red Sox might sort of be answered already for them.

Not sure about an extension for Bay, either.

No reason to believe he won't be there...
Doesn't he have options till 2020..

If my math is right we have 12 guys on the roster right now making under 1 milion dollars.

Right now with the players on the roster we only have like 105 million dollar payroll.they should lower ticket prices...
