G62: Red Sox 5, Rays 1

Rays - 000 100 000 - 1 8 1
Red Sox - 003 100 10x - 5 11 0
And Boston is back in first place!

Beckett (6-7-1-0-5, 92) worked around some long counts and some difficulty with his curveball in the early innings. He was followed by Manny Delcarmen, Hideki Okajima Craig and Hansen, who combined to allow only one hit and one walk over the final three frames. MDC struck out all three of the Rays he faced.

Tonight's #3 hitter J.D. Drew singled, doubled, walked, scored twice, had one RBI, and stole a base. Kevin Youkilis singled twice, as did Coco Crisp. Coco also walked, brought in a run with a sac fly, and appeared to punch Akinori Iwamura in the groin while trying to steal second in the eighth inning.

Crisp was tagged out and roughly 10 minutes later, during a Rays pitching change, Tampa manager Joe Maddon was yelling some bad words into the Red Sox dugout at Coco.

Weird play, Joe! The teams decided to duke it out and meanwhile Fleury couldn't keep it out of the net.

Weird play! Fleury had it, but then didn't. And it triiiickled in.

Joe Grav said...

Rob said...

That just might have sealed the deal right there for Detroit.

Benjamin said...

Yeah, Duncan slid into Iwamura.

There seem to be very little respect given to guys' balls in professional sports.

Not sure. I'd recommend everyone on the Red Sox wear cups tomorrow.

Benjamin said...

I hope Coco's wearing his cup tomorrow.

Benjamin said...

Get out of my head.

7-5 Twins. Looks like the MFYs will be out of the cellar.

We win, and no one says anything?

Pretty quiet thread tonight.

OK, for some reason the comments didn't appear. Now I see them. Sorry. Thought you all had fallen asleep before the game ended.

Rob said...

Watching hockey. Hard to go back and forth with that one. For some reason I still think Pittsburgh's got a bit of a chance...

Joe Grav said...

No way ish. It is over.

Rob said...

No way ish. It is over.

Oh I know. I mean, you still wish they could pull out a miracle, but reality is reality.

Benjamin said...

Pittsburgh's scored more goals than any team in playoff history.* It'd be an insult to their fans not to stay in until the end.

*Not really.

I like how nobody's left the building.

Joe Grav said...

i wouldnt miss out on a chance to see THE CUP.

Rob said...

This is what I love about hockey fans. They boo even now. But also kinda cheer and then chant things. I think they're chanting "Crosby" while Zetterberg holds the MVP trophy.

I found oot in the postgame Coco was retaliating from the sixth inning on that steal attempt Bartlett covered the bag with his leg and Mccarty said you just don't do that so Coco took out Iwamora....Good for Coco

Rob said...

And then there are cheers when the Cup is brought out...

Joe Grav said...

the cup looks great in HD

McLaren's post-game Carlin routine is hilarious.

I love watching all the cameramen bumbling around the ice.

Yeah, he really was. That little squeaker for the third goal was such a heartbreaker.

Joe Grav said...

i thought i heard a whistle on that play. guess not.

Rob said...

i thought i heard a whistle on that play. guess not.

He had the whistle in his mouth, but never blew it. Instead he saw the puck squeak out of Fleury and put it in his pocket.

They mentioned during the broadcast that was Yook's 22 multi hit game .They have only lost 3 of those games he has multiple hits in.....And the 21 losses he played in and not got hit 14 losses....and they have 25 losses so, 18 losses he didn't get hit or play in those games....I find that very intersesing for some reason....If my math is right...

Allan, you said "wheat thing" up there--that's actually a more fitting name for Shelly, I think. Wheat Thing.

If we win at the same rate we're winning at at home for the rest of the season, and the same rate on the road as we're doing now, we'll end up with exactly 100 wins. Of course, the home percentage is crazy high now, but even if it goes down a lot and the road goes up a little, that'd still be, like, 95 wins.

March '06 on the deflating balls commercial. But I forgive Phil/phrenile for not watching TV 24/7 for the last two years:)

Oh, and speaking of the glass-eyed one*, one of my earliest trips to NYC was as a four-ish year old to see Sandy Duncan in Peter Pan.

*I always heard she had a glass eye, but looked it up just now to find it was a rumor. (By coming across countless sites written by people who did the same thing and wrote about it.)

I wonder if that's what happened to Andy's meatballs.
