G55: Mariners 4, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 003 000 - 3 7 1
Mariners - 201 000 001 - 4 8 1
Once again, the Red Sox rely on Timlin in a tie game in the ninth inning when Papelbon is presumably available. And once again, that decision ends in a quick loss.

Brad Mills was calling the shots, after Terry Francona was ejected (along with Lugo) in the fifth inning, shortly after Matsuzaka left with a possible hip injury. In the ninth, Balentien reached on an infield single that Cora could not field in the hole. Balentien moved to second on Cairo's bunt and took third on Reed's grounder to second. After Ichiro was walked intentionally, Lopez lined a game-winning single past Lowell at third down the left field line.

... Timlin -- never a good decision.

(Although, honestly, Old Yeller did alright, all things considered. If Cora makes the play in the hole, everything might have been fine and the game might have gone to the 10th.)

Dice allowed three early runs before Manny tied the game with his 499th career dong.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.40, 180 ERA+) / Miguel Batista (6.47, 61 ERA+)

Clay Buchholz could come off the disabled list on Wednesday, but he'll make at least one more start for Pawtucket -- Friday against Durham.

Jon Lester was named the AL Player of the Week. (His father has been diagnosed with lymphoma.) ... Julian Tavarez has signed with the Brewers.

wow. sox are exciting right now.

back to the off-topic stuff.

Any of you familiar w/ the Frantics? Canadian comedy group from the 80s, most famous for Boot to the Head. They had a great skit called Making Up Dirty Words.

"oooh...I see you're reading the paper. I bet you're enjoying all the dirty words in there."

"oh, look at that headline: Rain Predicted In Some Areas. areas. that's a dirty word."

"no it isn't."

"it is if you say it right."

just gets better and better.

I hope Grant wasn't scared away forever. It's always a good thing to learn how things can be perceived, regardless of what might have been innocent intentions.

Manny made that look pretty.

Joe Grav said...

ish missed 201!

laura k said...

201 = me!

Rob said...

Grant is incredibly nice (to a fault), he's also very naive and probably didn't even realize that a lot of people wold take offense to that.

You know how it goes. You say something you think is funny but most people don't. example being Don Imus.

Rob said...

ZOMG I GOT 208.

Joe Grav said...

I hope Grant wasn't scared away forever.

Me too, since i've been telling him to come to JoS since forever

Amy said...

Allan, I could see your not equal to symbol.

laura k said...

Nick, I can't believe you just posted about the Frantics. We have a friend here - a long-time reader/commenter on my blog - who loves them. He's been posting stuff about them on wmtc since before we moved to Canada.

And now they appear on JoS. World collide!

Joe Grav said...

"
You know how it goes. You say something you think is funny but most people don't. example being Don Imus."

It's definitely happened to me. The best thing to do is learn from your mistakes and not stubbornly refuse them

Patrick said...

You know how it goes. You say something you think is funny but most people don't.

That reminds me of a joke my father won't stop telling me, that he laughs at every time:

What do Irishmen keep on their back porch?

Patti O'Furniture.

laura k said...

Joe, you should totally tell Grant to come back and not be scared off.

Joe Grav said...

I will pass the message along

Benjamin said...

Joe Grav said...

Rob said...

Oi. Irishmen jokes. Robin Williams took a stab at that in one of his albums:

"They say the Irish discovered civilization. Then they had a couple of Guinness and forgot where they fucking put it."

Amy said...

Hey, Joe, tell him we are pretty forgiving here. We are, after all, Red Sox fans. We have lived through disappointment and recovered to come back another day, another year.

nick said...

Imus has been riding (crossing) that line for ages. usually he'll have some proxy say the offensive/racist/bigoted comment and it never comes out of his mouth. He's been caught plenty of times in the past personally and the level of repetition without any repudiation on his program is significant.

Joe Grav said...

Maybe if they did a report from Heidi, we would start to score some runs

Oh wait the girls are still here

laura k said...

Patti O'Furniture!!!! I am cracking up over that.

Allan and I have a joke about Paddy O'Blivion. It comes from some crazy drunk we met in a pub in Ireland.

Rob said...

Oh wait the girls are still here

Yeah. Stop hating on Heidi. She's the one who can get us some runs. You'll see.

Joe Grav said...

I will personally not be offended by any mafia jokes

allan said...

when he first posted it, i saw it and said wtf is this? i was tired and it was 12:15 or something, but i was actually sitting here asking myself "should i be offended be this? i think i should"

it took about 3-4 minutes before i snapped out of it enough to butt in.

it took me much less time to take offense at "calm down"!

laura k said...

Don Imus sucks.

Amy said...

Phil, are you a techie in another life (aside from law)? You were the TV consultant to Ish last week and now you know programming language.

Not really, L. you're awesome

Rob said...

Don Imus sucks.

Heh, I agree. I'd rather listen to a turtle walking across a field than to listen to him. But if there's an audience, he should be on a radio station.

Amy said...

Don Imus sucks.

Couldn't agree more. Though Howard Stern sucks worse. Why do people listen to these guys?

Joe Grav said...

Julio lugo = boring and predictable

Joe Grav said...

Joe Grav said...

I never enjyoed Don Imus's, pre-Rutgers incident. Found him ... well... boring and predictable

nick said...

I saw the racially insensitive comment (RIC) and thought, whoo-boy here it comes.

So wait. Gasoline is gasoline in Canada? Do many call it Petrol? I keep wondering to myself (since everyone can't stop talking about gasoline)... why is it called gasoline? Sounds like a stupid made up word. I like petrol better.

Patrick said...

I know we are looking bad thus far, but I am feeling strangely confident about this game.

allan said...

Stern, genius? If putting naked women on TV and having people throw sandwiches or whatever at the ir butts takes some kind of intellect, then yes, he's the biggest genius of all time.

That's like saying Manny totally sucks as a hitter because he strikes out. Only a small part of his game. (But those skits are great on radio!!!)

How about brilliant instead of genius? Talking every day for 4 hours for (what?) 20 years and being continually entertaining is an amazing talent.

When I listened a lot in the 90s, he would piss me off and I would shut him off for awhile, but eventually turned it back on -- when I was sure the topic had changed.

Sarah Haendler said...

it took me much less time to take offense at "calm down"

Yeah, no doubt. As soon as I saw that , I deeply regretted my own comment.

Clearly the NyQuil is working backwards tonight.

They're showing the Manny high-five. I think Manny did it just to piss off Jack Marshall.

nick said...

finally turned jere on (whoo-whoo).

he hates stern.

Rob said...

I'm with you, amy. His show is unlistenable because of it's crudeness.

It all depends on how you take the crudeness. Having said that... not a fan of Stern. But there are other things I've watched or read that would be offensive to a lot of people for its crudeness. Helps when you can look past it. But there are some things you can't look past.

Amy said...

I know we are looking bad thus far, but I am feeling strangely confident about this game.

Me, too. Ain't no one calling me negative tonight!

Joe Grav said...

So what's the score Ish? You must be in the lead.

Probably. Alright. You talked me into it. I'll update the list.

Ish was winning in the 201 category and perhaps 401 as well, IIRC. 601 was too small a sample size.

Yet I won the big one last season when I won Allan's book by being post 1000 without even knowing there was a contest going on.

Yeah, because at a certain point his posts become:

So I hope Allan likes it too :)

allan said...

he apologized AFTER i got pissed and he said calm down and people jumped on him. after.

which is fine, btw. that's kind of how those things go.

Rob said...

lmao. I love Grant's response to Allan being our Dear Leader. Oops.

Sounds like something I'd say.

Joe Grav said...

the simple explanation is that the Boomtown Rats, my favorite band, had a song called "Looking After Number One." Bob Geldof - the Live Aid guy - my hero, and lead singer of that band, wrote that song, which is obviously ironic given his dedication to charity.

Additionally, when I did debate in high school, my number was "01" (I was one of 4 people all time to have my number 'retired' by the team :-p)

laura k said...

Good point, Allan. Grant did not apologize after saying it. It's all there.

That might be my new favorite word

Was heidi at the Oakland games? I saw a hot blonde next to the sox dugout with a mic. I spent some time watching her every move from across the diamond hoping for the obligatory crotch shot. i had good binos.

I feel like I need to soften things up a bit after all the offensiveness that was going on yesterday.

I think this talk is a trademark Andy thing. It's your thing. Entertaining. Even if Patrick needs to wear his earmuffs all the time.

...O's have the winning run at second with 1 out against Rivera.

I feel like it is easy to get into an argument with, L, if you try.

I have a similar yet opposite relationship to OTC drugs, Patrick. I very rarely take them, so when I do, I notice it. I just LIKE when that happens - tonight notwithstanding, they tend to work really well!

OMG earmuffs....

Can't say I didn't warn you...

If we take enough tussin shots we might hallucinate some runs.

I saw you guys were going on about this heidi character. My wife wanted to be a part of my blogging so she had to read everything I wrote. That's mostly why I stopped writing. Then it just got too laborious. My wife kept yapping at me during the Ortiz homer so I missed that. My apologies. i wish i had a super zoom camera. i would have documented heidi's misadventures with the camera men stepping on her.
