G30: Blue Jays 3, Red Sox 0

Blue Jays - 001 010 100 - 3 9 0
Red Sox - 000 000 000 - 0 4 1
The Red Sox got four hits (two from David Ortiz) and six walks (Manny Ramirez and Kevin Cash each received two), but could not get a runner past third base. They stranded eight men.

They have scored 5 runs in their last 50 innings.

Wakefield did alright (7-6-3-4-0, 97) -- no Toronto batters struck out tonight -- but trailing by three runs during this team-wide slump was like being down by 15.

And now ... it's a weekend battle for first place with the Rays. Boston (17-13) and Tampa Bay (16-12) are tied atop the East.

***

A.J. Burnett (6.07, 69 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.06, 110 ERA+)
             IP H R ER BB K WHIP
Burnett 29.2 37 22 20 15 19 1.75
Wakefield 31 29 16 14 17 19 1.48
We may see a lot of baserunners tonight.

I'm continually fascinated by guys who find her in any way attractive. I just don't get it.

I'm indifferent. But if somehow you found yourself in a room with her and things could head in that direction, I'd think it'd be hard to say no.

laura k said...

No no, it doesn't have to be Ish. We've won games with other 201ers.

Rob said...

I transfer my bogus-walkoff-ability vibes to you.

The WH Correspondents Dinner speech was gold, you could see GWB was s#itting bricks, trying to look amused

I'm not sure who I'd vote for if HRC got the nomination (I'm not a particularly big fan of Nader, either). For a while, I would have been content with either Dem nominee, but slash-and-burn politics turns me off.

2 run triple for Det. 6-4 Tigers

Joe Grav said...

Thank you ish.

And ugh... I just don't see it. I'm not a big fan of STDs.

Am I allowed to say that on a family blog?

Jake of All Trades said...

Wow. MLB.tv way behind on me. Crisp just made first out of 7th.

laura k said...

Wowed by fake breasts? You can see fake tits every five minutes on TV.

Joe Grav said...

High, high, high off the wall.

Please take the Manny count-up off the monster, it's been a jinx

Amy said...

Hazel Mae holds no attraction for me.

laura k said...

JG, this is not a family blog. Or it is, but the family is two foul-mouthed Sox fans and their dogs. Say whatever you like.

(Unless you're a wingnut, then shut up.)

Jere said...

I love Colbert, have gone to 3 or 4 tapings of the Report. Haven't watched the show much lately, but we did buy his ice cream tonight before the game!

Joe Grav said...

Just watch your local newscast, or FOX News (god help you) for 3 minutes and you can get your fill of fake breasts for the day... and some of them can even form complete sentences

Rob said...

And ugh... I just don't see it. I'm not a big fan of STDs.

Theoretically, if she appeared magically in your room one night, and then would disappear afterward without any consequences, etc.

Joe Grav said...

I want to go to a taping, I put in for tickets but I don't know whatever became of my ticket application.

The ladyfriend and I are going to New York for a quick weekend trip at the end of May.

Joe Grav said...

Even then, ish, I'm just not sure.

Amy said...

Me, too, Joe. At one point I was on the fence. But the way the Clintons have run this campaign has truly sickened me.

I don't love Nader. This would obviously be a protest vote, easy for me to do here in MA since the Dems will win here anyway.

Jere said...

Ian Kennedy tonight: 4.2 IP, 4 ER. So right about the usual for the Yankee Cy Guys

Many hetero men appear to find any woman with long hair and cleavage and a not-horrible face attractive. Like they have almost no standards.

And many non-hetro men appear to be the same way about the male equivalent.

I'll never understand it, but then...

Joe Grav said...

Yah, same here. I think I would vote for Gravel if he got the LP nomination. That party is a real cluster-bleep right now, so he might have a chance.

RUNS TIME.

Benjamin said...

No consequences? Then hit her over the head with your nightstand, swipe her wallet, and buy some Red Sox tickets.

Yay! Great time of year to go, too.

Joe Grav said...

I've always thought that. Plus it's like "YO DOOD SHE IS ON NESN" which makes people overrate her even more. Almost as much as Danica Patrick (barf)

laura k said...

Phil's got the right use for Hazel.

Interesting mental exercise: Look at any woman (or guy) you see, and decide, if they showed up magically in your room, whether you would or not. No consequences. Nobody would know.

Steam the spinach.

We're also going for two days in mid-August, as one of her favorite musicians from across the pond (Jarvis Cocker, formerly of Pulp) is doing a show at Terminal 5.

We're still trying to figure out what else we're going to do. I want to go to the Mets game, but I don't think that will fly. Central Park is always a winner.

Jere said...

Weird. I never had a problem. But if you do get tix, get there early or you'll get shut out.

Joe Grav said...

I respect and appreciate what Danica is doing, especially since the other racers and the media have such a patronizing attitude toward her, but I've never gotten the "Danica-as-attractive" thing.

At least Papi seems to be back. But this is so frustrating.

These games have been so short.

She reminds me of my sister. But I think there is something about her that people do like. I think she's a lot like Hillary Clinton - I don't look at her on a different level than the other racers (or candidates) because they're women.

I'd like to see her win Indy sometime. I would not like to see Clinton win anything. But that's another story.

laura k said...

I don't know if Danica Patrick is on NESN, I was just going by Joe's post re "she's on NESN, so.. like Danica Patrick". I probably read it wrong.

JG, email me if you need any info or whatever on NYC. Before my knowledge gets too outdated.

Joe Grav said...

She does seem like a nice person. I'd like to see her win. Although there is this guy named Justin Simmons or something who went to Boston College who races in some of those, so I'd probably root for him.

A little thing that annoys me is how bad Lopez is against left-handed batters, and how good he is against righties. And yet, he's still comes in against lefties as a lefty specialist.

Yeah, heard that on the radio. Stress fracture.

Joe Grav said...

Aardsma , has been decent , but hasn't been trusted in any huge spots yet

Rob said...

Seems like an interesting injury to crop up on a pitcher. A broken rib.

Joe Grav said...

Well, he's a lefty, so he has to pitch against lefties, just how you have to bunt/play hit and run in this situation, and you HAVE to wait for a save situation to bring in the closer.

Don't you know the rules?

and as for the Danica/NESN thing, I didn't adequately explain myself but I thought it was self evident : guys/ the media tend to over-blow the hot-ness of any female who has anything to do with sports, as if women covering/playing/being big fans of sports was any sort of novelty these days.

I'd want to throw the ball so it hits the knob of the bat and goes foul.

It still bugs me when he sprints to first on a walk.

Joe Grav said...

re: Eckstein choking up: I was saying that the other day to my dad - that, and how he loops the ball when he throws - and he thought i was totally insane

I believe we've already had the Kathyrn Tappan discussion on this blog at some point (not that I'm complaining)

Timlin in. No comment.

no K for sox pitchers tonight.

I thought she did color. I heard a woman doing color for an NBA game with Dan Shulman doing pbp.

allan said...

timlin: 14 hits in 6 innings and almost 3 baserunners per inning

yay!

Joe Grav said...

Pam Ward is a horrible play-by-play announcer. I'd have to think she's set back the cause of female pbp announcers for a long time, as she is just bad.

One of many reasons to miss Bruins Overtime Live.

COMEBACK THYME

Jere said...

TYR* in progress. First two guys get out. Next guy hits one that the shortsop doesn't put his glove down for. Damon hits one about 30 feet and the catcher can't pick up the ball on the wet grass. Jeter (after Kay talks about whether or not he was "born with his clucth ability") hits a slow roller to third and beats it out.

*Typical Yankee Rally

Joe Grav said...

be manny.

laura k said...

Lost my wireless connex for a while.

Our Buffyvision announcer was a teammate of Timlin's on the Jays. When the old has-been announcer was your teammate, it's time to retire!

But Abreu strands three! 6-4 Det after 6..

Joe Grav said...

But a home run would be a rally killer! [/stupidity]

Joe Grav said...

Well, he walked him, but Manny didn't oblige.

Rob said...

I am sure you will see a woman doing pbp in baseball, in the not-distant future.

I agree. I can't say I think it will never happen. And it's not a bad idea - personality is key. She needs to make you think of Danica Patrick and Hillary Clinton and, yes, Suzyn Waldman: not make you think she's a woman. Make you think she's a pbp announcer. Or a politician. Or a race car driver.

laura k said...

guys/ the media tend to over-blow the hot-ness of any female who has anything to do with sports, as if women covering/playing/being big fans of sports was any sort of novelty these days.

God is this ever true. Including Kathryn Tappan. Cute, but come on, just another one on TV. There's a million of them.

Damn. I haven't seen a Sox win in a while.

Amy said...

Uch, not feeling the walkoff tonight.

laura k said...

Ish, whatever you might think of any of those women, they are those things - race car driver, politician, sportscaster. There are many men equally as good or bad, and no one questions whether they are "really" in their profession.

I know you don't mean to be sexist, but perhaps it's coming out inadvertantly.

Rob said...

If they lose, they lose. You lose a third each season. But they haven't scored a run. We've been banging on about this for awhile, but another shutout - oi.

allan said...

players you hate for no apparent reason: ryan is on my list.

Miggy dong. 8-4 Tigers.

Come on Coco, one hit and the tying run's up

Joe Grav said...

gah.

Jere said...

wait! not over!

Amy said...

Balk?

laura k said...

Ugh. This game sucked.

.... Wait, we're still playing?

Joe Grav said...

from urbandictionary:
"Press Box Hot:
An interesting phenomenon that occurs when a semi-attractive female enters a sports-related setting. Instantly, her stock rises several points because of the high percentage of dudes in the press box. A similar phenomenon occurs, when one chick attends a sausage fest or sword fight.

Press box hot can turn a chick who is normally a 5 out of 10 into a 9"

Joe Grav said...

Huh? what? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Please come back. Please!

Joe Grav said...

THis would be the greatest thing in the history of ever.

laura k said...

Joe, nice find!

Rob said...

I know you don't mean to be sexist, but perhaps it's coming out inadvertantly.

Might have turned out that way. What I mean is the fact they're women is secondary to just the type of person they are. But either way.

Weird happenings right now. Balk? Ryan has a very short pause when he sets to when the pitches. Could have been that.

Joe Grav said...

For a second, I really thought that he was just going to pop up the next pitch.

Rob said...

Oh boy!

Tying run to the plate!

Jere said...

nice! now we tie it!!!!

laura k said...

WHOO-HOO! We are still alive.

Amazing.

People are still standing from when they got up to leave.

Joe Grav said...

This would/could be more ridiculous than mothers day 07

laura k said...

What I mean is the fact they're women is secondary to just the type of person they are.

That should always be the case, when judging any public person.

Buffyvision is acting like they've never seen anything weird ever happen in any baseball game ever.

so the out is called back. guy gets a hit. i think the next 2 got hits and the yankees ended up with a walkoff win.

allan said...

yep, that was the game.

i thought it was greenwell out there.
