G141: Red Sox 7, Orioles 6

Neither starter made it out of the fourth inning. Wakefield was either rusty or his back was still acting up: 3.2-9-6-2-0, 74. It was the first Wakefield start this season in which he did not get a decision.

Kyle Synder came in and got the last out of the fourth and pitched a scoreless fifth. Clay Buchholz threw three scoreless innings (Weren't the Sox limiting him to one inning per outing?). Most of his early pitches were up, as he walked his first batter, allowed a single and then walked his third batter. But after Mike Lowell started a 5-2-3 double play, CB calmed down. Baltimore did not get another runner on base, as he fanned Kevin Millar to end the sixth, then pitched a perfect seventh and eighth.

In the top of the ninth, Coco Crisp (who also singled and scored in the third and belted a three-run dong in the 4th) reached on an infield hit that Brian Roberts could not bare hand. Crisp stole second and scored on pinch-hitter Jason Varitek's opposite-field single to left.

Jonathan Papelbon needed only 11 pitches to shut down the O's in the bottom of the ninth, finishing the game with a called strike three on Millar.

MFY were off tonight, so we lead the East by 6.5.

Magic #: Sweet 16.

***

Tim Wakefield (4.16, 109 ERA+) / Garret Olson (7.22, 62 ERA+)

Olson has faced the Red Sox twice this year -- August 11 and September 1 -- pitching a total of 11.2 innings and allowing 15 hits, 11 walks, and 8 runs.

Buchholz calls Pedroia, "Pedro."

I strenuously object.

allan said...

don sez sox pen quiet. clay for a 3rd inning?

i thought the sox said they were not doing this, they were using him for an inning every 3-4 days.

Pedro would be a good name for him if Pedro didn't mean anyone else to us.

Uncle Joe: That Ellsbury kid really hangs in.

Made me chuckle.

But the J.D. Drew DP didn't make me chuckle at all.

it also sucks to hit 3 straight singles and have 0 runs.

Please, dear God.

Bench Drew.

He is a rally killer and a team energy sapper.

And -- he just doesn't seem to give a rat's ass. Never changes expression. Never shows any emotion.

If I were management I'd be trying to run him off about now.

In baseball, this is a good thing.

Jere said...

Don't even know what to say about the guy any more. Fly ball, we have the lead. Just, no more Drew. Ever. Not the popular opinion around here, but I'd be totally fine never seeing him on the field again.

Pedroia did answer Hazel Mae recently, when asked if he has any nicknames, by kind of shrugging and saying "Pedro?" On the Ultimate Red Sox Show I think.

allan said...

remember, since the all star game, both yook and tek are hitting quite a bit worse than drew, so make sure you run them out of town too.

Rob said...

I give him another chance next year, and if he's still bad, I know there'd be a lot of teams looking for him. You could get a bit out of him by trading by 7.31 because a lot of people will consider the Boston Effect and think he'll be fine with a change of scenery.

Rob said...

OCOC Ducksnort!

Jere said...

Tek and Youk are good. Drew stinks. Drew: out.

The thing is, like I said when we got him, if he does good, I don't care if it doesn't "look like" he's trying. But the guy does neither.

coco with the ichiro swing! cocichiro!

heh, heh - Nice start , and Tek in

SoSock said...

BTW - probably old news, but Sox.com says Mirrabelli has a strained LEFT hamstring, so a whole new injury

OK, you have a point. But after all the truly memorable hype, drama, fanfare, etc. when he came back, couldn't we just put him out to pasture somewhere?

Amy said...

Been on the road listening to the game, got in to see TEK drive in the go ahead run! That's my captain!

allan said...

No, we have to continue the drama, by having Theo shoot him.

Amy said...

Another save opp for Papelbon. I didn't see Buchholz pitch but I take it he calmed down. Perhaps he had to give up a hit so the pressure would let up?

Rob said...

BOT TIME.

allan said...

CH had a BB, 1B, BB to his first 3 hitters. Then after a 5-2-3 DP, he calmed down. Most of his early pitches were up, but after the DP, he retired 7 in a row.

Rob said...

It's Snuffin' Time!

That sounds better.

Lots of debate recently about cheap saves, legit saves, changeing the definition, etc. Any debate about this one, boys? How about the new structured long-man? And that JD sucked the life right out of them! Magic #16.

Jere said...

Remember when Pap interviewed Millar, and Millar asked for a free pitch if he said Pap was the hottest pitcher or whatever? I feel like Pap gave it to him on pitch one, ha. Then mowed him down. 6.5 games.

Is WEEI still trying to convince Sox fans to slit their wrists?

Is WEEI still trying to convince Sox fans to slit their wrists?

Short answer is yes.

This is what I expect to hear tomorrow -

Ellsbury because Drew sucks about 15 times an hour.
The starting pitching is a mess except for Beckett since Wakefield couldn't get past 4 innings about 15 times an hour.
Drew is stupid and has no fire about 10 times an hour.
WTF is Theo not allowing Francona start Buccholz about 10 times an hour.
Ads about 10 times an hour.

Fortunately for me I will be in the office for about 1/2 of the day so I won't be listening to this tripe all day.

Ah, but then I would have no reason to complain. You wouldn't want to take away my pleasure in that would you?

Let it never be said.

I find there are always things to complain about. Never any need to purposely put myself in their way.

Rob said...

RS, you're not going to like this.

Good news isn't good enough. Some guy thinks a feel-good story is too-good-to-be-true, so he sleuths around looking for something to prove his theory correct, and he finds something. Whether it's true or not is questionable, but what if it is?

allan said...

I saw that. Was wondering if I should make a post about it.

According to my quick read of the article, he has done nothing in violation of MLB rules. He apparently stopped ordering the drugs when MLB banned it. However, it is hard to imagine he also simply stopped using them that day also.

It definitely would put a damper on one of the best stories of the season.

Yeah, but when you are a curmudgeon you have to go out of your way for these type of things. Besides I look at this way -

"I listen to WEEI so that you don't have to, consider it my service to JOS nation".
