G134: Yankees 5, Red Sox 0

Never a dull moment.

Wang followed the TCM (5.1 no-hit innings) with six no-hit frames of his own this afternoon before leaving with a 7-1-0-4-5, 103 line.

Cano hit two solo home runs off Schilling (7-6-2-1-4, 88) -- leading off the 3rd and 5th innings -- then the MFY tacked on three more runs off Jeemer in the eighth (an RBI double from Abreu and a throwing error by Varitek (which allowed two runs to cross)).

The bats were non-existent: 13 hits in the three games, only six in the last two. And six runs in 27 innings. ... But as the true measure of the offense was not the White Sox series, neither is it these past three games. There will be panic, but my glass in (at least) half-full. A 80-54 record and a five-game lead at the end of August.

Now we feast on the dregs of the East for 13 games: the Orioles (at Fenway tomorrow), Blue Jays and Devil Rays. Then the Yankees invade Fenway on September 14.

***

Curt Schilling (4.11, 110 ERA+) / Chien-Ming Wang (3.95, 109 ERA+)

Random notes:
Schilling has allowed five earned runs all three times he's faced the Yankees this season. Twice, the team has won, though the right-hander was long gone on both occasions. ... the Yankees are hitting him at a .372 clip. ...

Wang has been shaky in three starts against the Red Sox this year, allowing nearly two baserunners per inning, but still managing to win two of his three starts. ...

Bobby Abreu is the only Yankees regular to have never homered off Schilling. But with 14 hits in 37 career at-bats, he also holds a .378 average off the right-hander, tops on the team.
In New York, even after two wins against Boston, they are talking only about the wild card.

Mark Feinsand, Daily News:
Last night's 4-3 Yankee win over the Red Sox might not have the city of Boston in a panic-stricken uproar this morning. But maybe it kept the Beantowners from getting a full night's sleep while the Bombers were daring to dream.

Yes, the Yankees still trail their rivals by six games in the American League East, a huge margin with just 29 games remaining in the season.

laura k said...

mattysox, understandable.

sarah gates, YES.

nick said...

A wang and two dongs, dammit. They've shown us theirs; we need to show 'em ours.

Rob said...

I'd like to see someone sometime throw a no-hitter and lose the game. I still think people need to take walks into consideration when praising a guy for a no-hitter.

I mentioned this last night, but Schilling had 1 hit, 0 walks, and just the one baserunner (on an error), and people are disappointed. They get obsessed with the status of it. The fact that you did not give up a hit. Already Wang's game today isn't as impressive as Schilling's was in Oakland, to me.

Jere said...

Has the squirrel gotten a curtain call yet?

That DP happened so fast the cameras couldn't catch up. Had to rely on Uncle Joe for the DP call.

allan said...

easy DP!!!

Jere said...

I had a chance to go to Roger's first 20K game. But I lived 2.5 hrs from Fenway and it was a school night and we were offered THAT day. Oh well. I'm sure I would've burned my ticket stub by now if I'd gone.

Andy Hawkins lost a 8 inning no-no for the Yankees to the White Sox ... 4-0.

Several outfield errors in one inning. 8 innings becuz it was in Chic and they won.

Schilling has 4 K's to Wang's 3... and yet, it's Wang who is pitching the NO-HITTER.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm with you ish. Schilling was more impressive.

"Dongs" aren't likely off a guy who's given up only 9HRs all year. You're more likely to get a "seeing eye" groundball through the infield.

Meanwhile, Cano's drilling Schilling, albeit he's the only Yankee who's drawn blood (albeit Schilling's getting outs on some hard-hit balls).

Nice K of Ortiz by Wang. I didn't want to see the no-hitter broken after a blown no-swing call for Ortiz.

nixon33 said...

well, lets evaluate:
the old man has kept us innit. (albeit getting out of some trouble)
wang has pitched a no hitter thru 6 via todays pathetic looking red sox lineup (i dont mean the order)
hope we can scratch out some hits...and that tito isnt slow with the hook before it gets/if it gets out of hand.

MattySox said...

The Leggett thing is just funny to me...Wang's ground balls made me think of that McCarver quote from the '04 Series, and that made me think of Leggett's obsession with all things McCarver...just a funny guy to pick on...

Rob said...

I'd go after my a/c.... but it's my a/c. I've got some tennis balls in here I could fire indiscriminately. See what gets hit.

allan said...

Is "albeit" becoming the new "dong"?

Jere said...

Me and Matty know Leggett from our blogs.

So, I'm getting Yankee fan spam, which I'm rejecting, at my blog. The best ones are when they act like they're a Sox fan. Like, this one ripped Curt for being "washed up" and made fun of Youk hitting fourth, not even knowing Manny's injured, and then at the end says "I'm embarrassed to be a Sox fan!" If that didn't prove they were really a Yankee fan, a quick check of Statcounter shows the NY address.

Good call there too because I am. However, I'm also a Curt Schilling fan so the best outcome for me would be:

2) Wang has a great outing
3) Yankees win

All conditions are being met thus far ;)

any thoughts?

Jere said...

"this is a boston red sox blog right? you are surprised someone said something negative about new york?"

That's what I don't get. You think Mets fans--citizens of NYC--don't hate the Yankees, too? A "New Yorker" is not "a Yankee fan," it's someone who happens to live in New York. They can be a Sox fan, even.

MattySox said...

Nix- didn't see the play, just heard it, but I like the theory...force the fielder to come to you...then it's 1st and 2nd with only one out...

Certainly a better play because it takes the DP away and keeps two men on. With 1 out, mind you. Instead of 1 on with 2 out. There would have been another batter after Varitek, provided he struck out anyways.

MattySox said...

We couldn't have asked for better from Father Curt...at some point the sticks have got to get going...

Funny thing is that here in DC I have to explain to my boys that we despise the *Yankees* -- not New York City or its residents. Then again they are all under 10 years old, so YMMV. :)

nick said...

Yeah, Nix, if he's fairly sure he's gonna be out, he can keep the double play at bay. It makes sense to me, but I doubt I'd think of it if I were in that situation. There's also a reason I'm not on that field.

Terrekain said...

Glad to see Schilling get into the 7th, heck he might get into the 8th. However, the Yankees are seeing him a 3rd and 4th time around despite his low pitch count. Tito would definitely be pushing his luck if he brought out Curt in the 8th regardless of the results in the bottom of the 7th.

Gagne? I'd love to see some tack-on support for Wang.

As for the Yankees, they're set-up with Viz and Joba.

Terrekain said...

Jeter - 4 for 4.

As long as you don't get fooled on the motion, Jeemer has "only" a good fastball with a better-than-average split. It's not something you can stamp an under-two ERA on once MLB hitters get used to it.

but it sucks. a sad display for sure.

Rob said...

Well Okajima is in the same company as guys like Glavine, Maddux--even Kason Gabbard. You could also make the argument for San Diego's Chris Young, who all can survive on fastballs in the upper 80s and rely on hiding the ball and your other pitches. And Okajima usually is a one-inning guy, as opposed to four others mentioned above, among other pitchers. Look at Schilling today, allowing just two runs with a high 80s fastball.

It can be done. It's risky to pitch to major league hitters without the gas, but it can be done.

It's just something that hangs over your head. Getting swept. By the Yankees. It's these games that do make me feel nervous about October, with or without the Yankees. There's still Seattle, Anaheim, Cleveland, Detroit, and then New York. So three of those teams would be in the playoffs. It's Seattle, Detroit, and New York that really concern me. Though if we played Seattle we'd have home-field advantage. Safeco is a house of horrors.

And so is Yankee Stadium, for that matter.
