G116: Red Sox 6, Orioles 2

Beckett (8.2-8-2-0-8, 115) was one strike away from a complete game shutout. Tito needed to use both MDC (12-pitch walk to Huff) and Snuffer (3 pitches to Mora, P4).

Drew: 3-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Lugo: 2-for-3, 2B, BB, 2 RBI
Varitek: 1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 RS
Pedroia: 2-for-4, RBI
Ortiz and Manny: 1-for-9, 5 K, 13 total LOB

Chokers in Cleveland (Mussina/Byrd) at 7 PM. Feel free to discuss here.

***

Josh Beckett (3.31, 137 ERA+) / Garrett Olson (3.86, 113 ERA+)

Itching to see a no-hitter? Well ...
No Red Sox hitter has faced 23-year-old Garrett Olson, who will make just his third Major League start.
It's the Fox game.

Don't want to hurt the guy's arm trying to get him a CG. Besides, what do we want the final score to be?

laura k said...

Allan, sounds like you're still steamed over our recent visitor.

looking for new sub titles hmm. How about - A voice for sanity in an insane Red Sox Nation!

allan said...

I am - a bit.

I gots me a itchy delete finger for this evening, since I assume some people might discuss the other game tonight.

allan said...

Also pissed at having to do work at my job.

s1c said...

It would be nice if Tek would catch those foul tip strike threes. If he hadn't dropped Tejeda's this game would be over.

Bot warming up.

laura k said...

GOOD

laura k said...

Bot warming? Come on MDC, get it done. Let Snuffer have the day off.

A voice of reason in a nation of insanity?

Yo, MDC ... we're waitin' here.

laura k said...

I like the rotating subtitles.

s1c said...

11 pitches, give me a freaking break, would you just get this game over MDC.

It's just Aubrey Huff toting his hefty .258 BA.

Oh. Duh.

Bye all. Hasta later.

see you next game - vaya con dios.

s1c said...

Ok - one last thing re - GAGNE - just saw this on the courant blog.

Terry Francona talked a little today about Eric Gagne's meltdown in the eighth inning, saying that the biggest problem -- last night and in general -- is that Gagne is trying too hard to make an impression with his new team. Francona said Gagne looked like he was trying to do a Tom Seaver impression Friday night, "droppin' and drivin'" his leg, instead of throwing the way he normally does.

Someone trying to hard. Hey, I'll accept that, now just get back to throwing strikes.

tim said...

Question:

Why did bot get credited with a save in a 6-2 game?

allan said...

I can't remember the exact rules, but something like: Because the tying run was at the plate or on deck.

I believe you were trying to bait people into arguing about all of the Sox you mentioned: Ortiz, Dice, Pedroia, Drew, Beckett, Lugo, etc.

If that is your intention, there are plenty of other blogs where people get into that crap. You happened to stumble on one of the few places where everything doesn't degenerate into an screaming match of stupidity.

If that is not your intention, and you'd like to join our core group and talk about the Sox, then I suggest you read a few other threads (though game threads are more off-the-moment posting and tend to not necessarily of a high quality, though we do discuss South American dictators sometimes!) to get a sense of what goes on here.

I'd also bone up on your reading comprehension.

becoming a Red Sox fan magically the same year as they win the WS

2003 and 2004 are separate years.

laura k said...

I just stopped by.

I became a Red Sox fan in the summer of 2003.

Your profile is not visible, but something tells me I was a Yankees fan before you were born.

Mike, I'm not interested in proving the extent of my Yankee fan-ness to you. It needs no proof. It was as diehard as it gets. And yes, I went in the ultimate other direction, had my heart broken along with every other Red Sox fan in 2003.

Like many important things in my life, it's too complex for people like you to understand.

PS the Red Sox did not "magically" win the World Series. They won it after beating the Yankees like no team has ever beaten another team in the history of baseball.

Now I'm going back to bed.

laura k said...

FYI to everyone else, my short-version explanation was meant for Marcus. I didn't know the troll was coming back.

No reactionary speech please! Save that for Fox News!

allan said...

That's not baiting or trolling...

It's an insult directed at the commenter. Which I do not allow.

laura k said...

IF you are going to have strong reactionary speech about every comment I make about a team

....then...? If you are... then what?

You will leave?

laura k said...

I came back to see if the conversion was documented...

documented

Don't show up on my blog. I'll zap your comment so fast you'll wonder if you even posted it.

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who intentionally posts messages about sensitive topics constructed to cause controversy in an online community ... in order to bait users into responding. ...

As a speech act the term troll is generally used as an ad hominem argument, attacking the poster rather than the content or issues of the post. ...

laura k said...

haha, no appreciation for anything he gave boston for a decade...and funny that Boston was one of the main potential suitors for him BOTH times he came back from retirement - I guess Theo disagrees with you.

and Damon too? I mean c'mon he was instrumental in your one WS victory in the last 90 years...and you take a dump on his living room floor immediately afterwards? That's just not right.

Allan, do us all a favour and delete this jerk. He's probably reading my "confession" essay now and will be over shortly.

allan said...

I think I've been pretty civil

Let's see -- You come out of nowhere and jump right into a game thread with (a very short sample):

Pedroia, I hate him deeply

It's also unfortunate not enough national attention gets drawn to the 100 million being dished out for Drew and Lugo.

The Yankees are referred to as the Evil Empire because of their high payroll. in second place, not very far behind are the Red Sox...whose fans cry Evil Empire. 100 million for Dice K, 70 for JD drew, 40 for Lugo...

my 4 years of going to school in boston have made me bitter..

Aaron Boone.

I'm not being combative in any way.

especially I-girl, christ -- those 20 years in New York get you down or something?

Maybe you'll be lucky and Matt Clement will come back for free.

But it's OK I-girl -- I've met a lot of people in my time who have converted to the Red Sox fan base... needing a change from the NY scene... latching on to the 2004 winning ways... natural inclination to follow the leader.

**********************

That's a shitload of civil.

laura k said...

!!! Does anyone else have the game on EI with the Cleveland announcers? They just attempted to give the real story of the Brooklyn Dodgers moving to L.A., as told to them by Vin Scully. They *almost* got the whole thing right, except: "...and there was this guy, I think his name was John Moses, and he had more authority than anyone in New York when it came to building things, and he wanted a stadium built in Flushing Meadows in Queens..."

This guy, John Moses. One of the most famous New Yorkers - or Americans - ever to have lived. Except his name was Robert Moses.

laura k said...

I've met a lot of people in my time who have converted to the Red Sox fan base

I thought this was hilarious. Do you think he's ever met one other? "In his time"?

allan said...

Here's the game where the Tigers fan stopped by. I hope he comes back the next time we play Detroit.

allan said...

John Moses

Didn't he split the East River and go off to find a spot in Flushing?

allan said...

So our buddy is probably off reading wmtc at the moment, mmm?

laura k said...

I believe so.

laura k said...

split the east river? like parting the sea?

laura k said...

The Tigers fan was great. I'm sure he'll be back the next time we play Detroit. He liked the JoS crew.

allan said...

I believe so.

Hope you didn't use too many big words.

When should I announce I'm running for Prime Minister of Red Sox Nation?

allan said...

I'm bored at work.

I'm going to give away 10 free t-shirts to some lucky members of Joy Nation. Go to the Sock Report to see if you are a winner.

You'll also get a slice of pete's-zer with your shirt.

laura k said...

pete's-zer :)

These Cleveland announcers should work for YES. I've never heard non-NYY announcers kiss this much ass.

allan said...

Maybe they are auditioning. I'm sure the pay is better.

s1c said...

Jeez I go to bed to get some sleep before work and the troll comes back!

See, L-girl, I told you he thought he was being nice. And T-shirts aarrrrgh! I miss all the fun!

Fragging Indians - can you just once beat MFY when it counts.

allan said...

There was another comment from him here, briefly. In that one, he instructed me on how to be a fan.

s1c said...

Instructed you on how to be a FAN!
The boy has no clue.

allan said...

The usual stuff:

let go of all the hatred, you guys should leave this blog and go where "baseball is actually discussed and opinions aren't spat upon ... and people don't have a giant chip on their shoulder".

Plus he rags on me because, according to him, I became a Red Sox fan in 2004.

You didn't miss much. These guys never have anything original to say.

s1c said...

The boy should have had to follow a team like I had to back in the 70's and 80's before cable, internet etc.

The only way I could follow the Sox were through the papers and if they were on the game of the week, or if they were playing the Rangers or the Royals. Then I could here the games on the Radio.

I do not miss those days!

s1c said...

Kind of quiet at work so I have the Sox game on in the background!

s1c said...

And another pessimist voices concern - At the globe Ascend to the Sublime Sam Allis / the Observer wonders if or when the lead disappears.

laura k said...

leave this blog and go where "baseball is actually discussed and opinions aren't spat upon ... and people don't have a giant chip on their shoulder".

Has he been on the internet for more than 30 minutes?

according to him, I became a Red Sox fan in 2004

You sure he didn't mean me? (Still incorrect, but closer.)

laura k said...

Allan had the same thing, but substitute "when they were playing the Yankees". It wasn't easy.

laura k said...

Sam Allis / the Observer wonders if or when the lead disappears.

If the Yankees were 5 games up on the Sox, would these people feel NYY's lead was threatened? Or would they think, five games, that's a decent lead, poor Red Sox, always second place.

s1c said...

Dionnes Dugout has now conceded the Division to the Yankees. One more pessimist, grrr!

allan said...

From his comment:

I never said the Sox won magically in 2004 -- I said you 'magically' became a fan that year. ... I'm guessing by your profile that you were alive during the Bucky Dent game...but were probably a Yankee fan back then

He was very clearly addressing me.

allan said...

Dionnes Dugout has now conceded the Division to the Yankees.

Good lord, what an idiot. (He actually called the recent Gagne/Jeemer loss "possibly the worst [loss] I've seen in my life".) I could erase 2004 from his memory, I would.

I'm semi-curious how cocky this moran will get as the Sox cruise through the post-season, but I think I'll just pretend he doesn't exist instead.

Patriots Film said...

Oh my, look what fun I missed!

I was at the cape cod league playoffs, so I missed the game. How did MDC pitch? I know the outcome, but I just wanna know if he's falling apart again or if we can count on him.

allan said...

I couldn't help myself. I posted a comment (no need to click to his site though):

Possibly the worst loss you've seen in your life? When were you born? Two days ago?

Most Red Sox fans would consider Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS slightly harder to stomach.

Patriots Film said...

bahahhaa...i like the other comment better! s1c???

s1c said...

bahahhaa...i like the other comment better!

I assume you are talking about the second comment at the dugout. Nope, I didn't leave that message. Kind of wish I had though!

Patriots Film said...

Yeah, I was. I didn't think you did anyway ;)

s1c said...

As for MDC's outing, it wasn't bad, it was a 12 pitch at bat and Tek dropped a foul tip that would have been strike three. I also thought ball 4 was a strike. Huff just out lasted him in a good battle.

Patriots Film said...

Good, that's what I wanted to hear. Thanks. As long as he has his stuff, he's an important component.

laura k said...

He was very clearly addressing me.

To me it seems pretty clear he was addressing me! No matter. We can't expect trolls to distinguish.

laura k said...

Anyone whose team has a 5 GAME LEAD who concedes it as a loss shouldn't be allowed to be a fan. I swear, they should ban him from Fenway for life, delete NESN from his TV or EI schedule and make him wear a big I'M AN ASSHOLE sign on his t-shirt.

laura k said...

I couldn't resist either. Although we shouldn't reward his idiocy with traffic.

Patriots Film said...

Like it or not, it's just more proof that both the sox and the yanks have their loser fans...sad but true, i must accept it!!

laura k said...

Chris, I agree completely. It's one of my constant themes.

s1c said...

In the comment section that never dies! Boy this comment section has had all you could ask for:

- A troll
- Links to those who have given up
- Some game comments
- and late night twiddling of thumbs.

As for dionne - does this disqualify him from the contest?

allan said...

make him wear a big I'M AN ASSHOLE sign on his t-shirt.

Reminds me of Larry David having to wear the placard outside the restaurant saying he steals forks.

allan said...

As for dionne - does this disqualify him from the contest?

Don't tempt me. :>)

allan said...

There are 3 others with the same W-L prediction and he's got the lowest Dice ERA. It's unlikely he'll prevail.

laura k said...

Plus he said "never trust a Canadian".

Pfft.

laura k said...

You know this guy Dionne? Like, people read his blog?

laura k said...

Yes, it is the comment thread that won't die. Until Redsock puts up today's game thread, that is.

allan said...

Don't know him at all. Don't think he comments at all. Had to check the contest to see what s1c was talking about. But there he is.

s1c said...

That is how I found the post. I was taking a look to see how the predictions stack. Right now the 97-98 wins look good and My Daisuke ERA prediction looks WUNDERBAR (ow, I just sprained my arm).

laura k said...

s1c, I'm relieved to hear that's how you found the post.
